Good news, grantwriting is not about getting it ‘right’! A client of mine was working on a NIH K grant and started the session saying she felt overwhelmed. She had to rework the significance section and she felt stuck on writing Aim 1. ‘Am I doing this right?’ was on a loop in her mind. As a result, she was easily distracted, not getting much writing done, and believing she wouldn't be able to finish the grant. What if the goal wasn't to get it right? Here me out: we perfectionists think we need to get it right, so we slow down because we don't like how the messy middle feels. But the messy middle is necessary to get to a final product. In that call, I helped my client see that her next step was to write now and revise later. Let it be messy until it isn't. She was able to use that as a reminder and get more done each day while getting plenty of rest and exercise. She submitted the K grant on time too!! In Make Internal Shifts, I help my clients get grants. This example is how I support them when it gets overwhelming. Overwhelm shows up in a lot of ways. And my framework addresses all of them. Even yours. Beyond overwhelm, I help my clients with the entire process from idea to submission. We work on: - Pacing the work over months so you have contingencies for illness and room for vacation - Writing logical and compelling research so you appeal to reviewers - Assembling a support system so you can minimize blind spots and strengthen the quality of your proposal If you are a woman in academic research who wants a grant in 2025 and seeking help in making it happen, DM me and we can connect on how I can help you.

This is an Aims page truth you can’t ignore. It’s one of the most critical parts of your NIH application. It’s the page that every member of the peer review group will read. That’s why it’s crucial to craft it in a way that resonates with both your assigned reviewers and the rest of the study section. You’re appealing to those who know the intricacies of your field AND the broader review panel, who might not be as familiar with your specific expertise. This balance can make all the difference in your grant’s success. Need more tips on writing a compelling Aims page and improving your NIH grant writing skills? Emotion is the missing ingredient in many failed R01 submissions. Your reviewers are human. They’re busy, stressed, tired…and they’re reading your application for the first time Hoping they get excited about your research instead of intentionally creating a reason for them to get excited is a mistake you can’t afford to make. When you clearly, simply, and persuasively communicate your research, you spark the enthusiasm your reviewers must have to advocate for your grant. Want to write a more competitive application? We teach you how to generate enthusiasm among your reviewers. I am halfway through my "A to Z Grant Writing" online course from San Jose State University, and Lesson 6 on the Statement of Need for funding was enlightening. Here are some key takeaways: - Realistic scope definition is crucial to ensure target populations can be served within a typical 12-month grant award period. - Researching evidence to back narrative sections consumes 80% of a grant writer's time, with 20% dedicated to writing the narrative. - Avoid implying that one subgroup of grant beneficiaries will be the grant applicant's organization. Excited for the next lesson on Benefit to the Target Population. #grantwritingtraining

Being a writer on several academic (NIH), small business (SBIR), and corporate grants has taught me one thing ⏬ You have to be 100% in tune with your audience. Which, in this case, are grant reviewers. Poor grant applications are: ❌ written from the researcher’s perspective Successful grant applications: ✅ anticipate the reviewers’ questions in advance and answer them clearly So, if you want your grant application to be successful next time, wear the reviewer’s hat and know what they need. —————— I help academic institutions, small businesses, and corporate organizations with science and research grant applications. Do you have a project in mind? Let’s connect. #grantwriting
