We're pleased to announce the reopening of Ray of Hope Secure Custody, effective Monday, July 8th. This facility provides a safe and supportive environment for young men (aged 12-17) involved with the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Ray of Hope Secure Custody is more than just a custody and detention center; it is a rehabilitation facility offering a comprehensive program to address the underlying causes of criminal behaviour and reduce recidivism. Programs at Secure include case management, anger management, substance abuse prevention, education provided by on-site WRDSB teachers, post-secondary education opportunities, an extensive trades program, life skills development, and spiritual care. We're committed to investing in youth well-being and ensuring a smooth transition back into the community. We're looking forward to inviting youth back to our significantly enhanced facility. Thanks to our ongoing partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS), we’ve made substantial improvements. These include updating all security systems, enriching the staff training program, and expanding the trades program to include welding and small engine repair. We've also updated the facility to create a more trauma-informed environment. Please join us in congratulating the staff team at Ray of Hope for the work they poured into making re-opening possible. Thank you for your care and dedication to providing the highest level of care to these young men entrusted to us. #RayOfHope

If we can acknowledge that childhood trauma exposure is likely a key risk factor for subsequent juvenile justice involvement then we can work harder to create policies aimed at positively impacting youth. After spending time working with youth in the juvenile justice system as a detention officer, I came to realize just how passionate I am about improving the lives of youth. When a youth is detained, the experience of being involved in the juvenile justice system poses its own risk for the development of trauma. I believe that their needs to be policies put in place that stray away from harsh practices and implement more strength-based approaches within the juvenile justice facilities. We need better outcomes for our youth and we can do that by going above and beyond to provide them with trauma-informed care.

Students with disabilities represent a larger than average percent of the student population served in juvenile detention centers and correctional facilities. Educators who serve students in these environments face different challenges when providing special education services, including the implementation of postsecondary transition practices. This week's resource is an informal assessment that supports educators and transition professionals working with court-involved youth. Transition and Court-Involved Youth: Workplace Readiness Skills Assessment https://lnkd.in/eQyGdQfv This resource: ⭕ provides criteria for informally assessing workplace readiness skills in court-involved youth ⭕ describes what each skill looks like in action ⭕ facilitates creating an overview of each individual’s strengths and areas of improvement, as well as the next steps ----------------- The Center on Transition Innovations (CTI) is affiliated with the VCU Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (@vcurrtc), which is a part of the VCU School of Education (@vcusoe).

Mental health is crucial for adolescents because it significantly impacts their development, academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being. Adolescents are at a higher risk for mental health disorders, and early intervention can prevent these from worsening. Good mental health fosters resilience, effective coping skills, and helps prevent negative outcomes like substance abuse and self-harm. Supporting adolescent mental health ensures a healthier transition into adulthood.
Our Adolescent & Diversion Assistance Program (ADAP) serves Sarasota or Manatee County residents ages 11-17, who are involved with the juvenile justice program or are exhibiting behaviors that put them at risk of involvement with juvenile justice. ADAP offers individual and group counseling with an emphasis on learning better coping skills, anger management, and social skills to reduce the risk of repetitive destructive behaviors. Individual, group, and family counseling is available for adolescents and families needing support. Referrals are accepted from Juvenile Probation Officers, School Resource Officers, Law Enforcement Officers, and Bay's Florida Services/Juvenile Diversion Alternative Program. Services are FREE to youth and their families.
