Language(s) matter(s). EAL expertise matters. Importantly, it matters for student learning, teachers' language and intercultural awareness, and supporting language and cultural diversity in schools. Yet in many universities in Australia, EAL pedagogy is not an integral part of initial teacher education courses, and the provision of specialist TESOL courses in higher education has continued to drop as a priority. A national plan for EAL education recovery and reform is urgently needed.

At HHS, 63.5% of pupils have been identified as having English as an additional language (EAL) and 20% of those pupils are in Year 1. Within Year 1, there is a focus on Sentence Building, in order to support our EAL pupils. In this case study, we focus on three core themes: First, pupil voice and progress in a child’s first language. Additionally, how EAL support is integrated at HHS. Finally, how we prepare our children as fluent English speakers to function as members of a modern British Society. https://lnkd.in/eZ_iaZzP

In my experience, international school teachers (particularly those in IB schools) believe that they engage in culturally responsive practices, but research demonstrates our practices do not always align with our beliefs. Though educators care deeply about their students and are passionate about their work, the daily pressures of the classroom can make it difficult to seriously reflect on and change practices that do not align with our beliefs about ourselves. My latest article explores the conflict between what teachers believe and what they do.

California exempts transitional kindergarten students from English-language proficiency test 🗣️ ✍️ Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed legislation that exempts transitional kindergarten students from an English proficiency assessment designed for older children. The backstory: Under state and federal law, school districts must administer the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, known as ELPAC, to students whose primary language is a language other than English. But TK students were being tested using one designated for kindergarteners, which requires students to know how to read and write letters. Why it matters: Supporters of the measure said the test was developmentally inappropriate for 4-year-olds, many who are still learning how to read and write their letters. As a result, they say kids were being overidentified as English learners simply because the test was too hard for them. Why now: The state is in the midst of expanding transitional kindergarten to all four year-olds by the time school starts in 2025. That means younger and younger 4-year-olds will attend, and they would have to have taken an assessment meant for older kids. What’s next: The state Board of Education meets July 10 to discuss how to move forward with identifying and supporting English learner students. 🔗 https://bit.ly/4cnuiFO ✍️ Elly Yu 📸 Ashley Balderrama/LAist

[Sharing article 1 of 8] - Open access until early October 2024 Bao, Chen, & Jiang. (2024). Self-empowerment in the struggling transition from General English to EAP: Action and reflection of a Chinese teacher. Journal of English for Academic Purposes, 68, 101343. https://lnkd.in/gJTQCEu9 In this paper on the growth of teacher capacity and professional learning of EAP practitioners, the authors discuss how action research was able to empower a teacher in China who was struggling to transition from teaching General English courses to teaching English for Academic Purposes courses. In addressing the challenges presented by the transition, she used an action research design to systematically identify the problems she faced, plan and implement interventions, and evaluate the changes, through which she felt empowered to work through her struggles and to learn about her teaching. In this paper, the three authors demonstrate how the analytical framework of action research can guide EAP practitioners to reflect on and improve their classroom teaching. This paper is a good read for EAP/ESP practitioners and researchers who are interested in understanding how an action research design can be re-purposed in such a way to benefit and empower a teacher as well. #actionresearch #EAP #GeneralEnglish #highereducation #empowerment #teacher
