As graduation quickly approaches, we celebrate the incredible journey of our Cristo Rey Jesuit Seniors. Throughout the months of March and April, each CRJ Senior steps into the spotlight, presenting their final capstone project (“Project CEO”) to their corporate work-study supervisors and executives, showcasing the profound impact of the Corporate Work-Study program. For Georgina Hernandez ’24, “Corporate Work-Study combines two very different opportunities (school life and work life) in a way that is easy to transition”. While learning about mergers and acquisitions in her economics class, Georgina was able to experience a merger firsthand through her CWS job at SouthWest Water Company who completed the merger of their water and wastewater businesses to create Nexus Water Group, Inc., which was completed April 1, 2024. Like Georgina, many seniors share their professional achievements but also their personal stories and the journey that brought them here, the obstacles they’ve overcome, and the dreams they aspire to achieve. Moreover, they’ll highlight how their corporate work-study experiences have uniquely prepared them for their future careers. From refining essential skills to gaining invaluable real-world experiences, these seniors are poised and, as St. Ignatius of Loyola, a theologian and founder of the Jesuit Order inspired, are ready to “go forth and set the world on fire”, in whatever path they choose to pursue.  With a solid foundation of knowledge, character, and determination, they’re ready to soar to new heights. One of my favorite things is to share lessons learned that may help someone else. And as part of #HispanicHeritageMonth, I got to do just that on a recent panel with Cengage Group's Mosaic ERG (of which I am proud to be a Co-Executive Sponsor). Alongside Edwin Robles, my friend and first OnBoarding Buddy when I joined Cengage back in April 2022, we tackled all the questions our members had about everything from our journeys to become senior executives, the invisible scripts we grew up with being raised in Hispanic homes, how we navigated challenges and setbacks, to what we wish we had known earlier in our careers. It was a candid, no-holds barred exchange which allowed for deeper connection - even though both of our managers were on the call to support us! (Thank you Dawn Ehlers and Nhaim Khoury for always showing up for your teams.) As an example, I shared how I ended up on academic probation my first year in college because I was pursing being a doctor - the only career my immigrant parents believed would allow me to be "successful". Despite my best efforts, biology and organic chemistry got the best of me and my GPA was a disaster. Nonetheless, I committed to doing the work to dig myself out of the below 2.0 GPA I ended my freshman year with ( 😱 ) to ultimately get on the Dean's List each semester thereafter. The lesson: we get to decide how we navigate challenges, setbacks and what others may call "failures". I did not allow the probation to define me. In fact, I used it as fuel to persevere and prove that I was in the right place. Ultimately I discovered I wanted to be a lawyer (a distant second choice in my parents' eyes 😩 ), but one I was committed to accomplishing. Thankfully they quickly came around and always encouraged me on my new path. Life is never linear. It truly is a maze with ups and downs, twists and turns. And in my opinion, that makes it much more fun! Each of the challenges I have overcome are evidence of my resiliency. When our executive board began its term in May, we envisioned the potential impact our combined networks could achieve. Throughout the summer, all 16 board members leveraged our personal and corporate connections to maximize the value we could offer our members. With this intentionality, we sparked the highest engagement we've seen in years, with over 150 attendees at our kickoff meeting. We've also positioned ourselves to create pipelines for success that will significantly boost interview rates among our members by prequalifying and directly referring them to talent acquisition personnel at our partner companies. I’m extremely proud of my board members for stepping outside their comfort zones and working together to embody the NSBE mission. - Is there another campus leader you think should be featured next? I’m a mentor in the Leeds School of Business (https://lnkd.in/g3Pd6waU) and had the wonderful opportunity to meet with seven students yesterday to share my experiences relative to their career aspirations. As I sat and spoke to each student, it reaffirmed my belief in engaging and encouraging people early in their careers to express their opinions openly. Far too often, as students enter a job early in their careers, managers and companies tend to tell them to listen and learn but these managers don’t practice what they preach. I found in my career managing many people across different roles, the ones who often provided the most creative and potentially positive ideas were the ones who hadn’t already been beaten down thru years of being told to “just do what you’re told” or “that will never work, I know because I’ve been doing this for twenty years”. This is why companies often lose touch with their customers and become top heavy in management focusing more on personal compensation and bottom line profits over being innovative and responsive. So as I sat and spoke with the group it was again, so refreshing to hear the questions and gain their perspectives. It helps me (and would help others) when I stop, set aside my experiences, and listen to a fresh mind with a different and less tempered view as this is where you discover the hidden gems and ideas you’ll need to truly be successful, and perhaps more importantly, help shape the futures of others. I often heard the expression, “youth is wasted on the young,” but the truth “youth is wasted on the old” as the youth are often overlooked and ignored because the “older” more experienced people forgot how to actively listen and have lost touch with their past allowing their experiences to cloud their judgement and creative thinking. Our younger generations are our future and we owe them our experiences and life lessons without lecturing and in context to their aspirations, not ours. So, if you’re an older more experienced professional, take the time to engage, listen, engage again, and help them learn…you may be surprised at how much you learn as well.
