#CTIER #Data #Auto As highlighted in our previous post, the Indian automobiles and parts sector is the second largest spender on R&D in India. The sector is also internationally competitive with the R&D intensity of firms like Mahindra and Mahindra and Tata Motors close to global average for the sector. Mahindra and Mahindra spent 4.8% of their sales on R&D. This was followed by Tata Motors and Bosch at 4.4%. The R&D intensity of these companies is almost at par with the global average of 5.1% for the auto sector. However, the rest of the firms spent considerably less than the global average. Ford is set to repurpose its Chennai plant to manufacture vehicles for global markets under its Ford+ growth plan. The move follows a meeting between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Ford leadership in the US. Ford, which employs 12,000 workers in Tamil Nadu, plans to add 2,500-3,000 more jobs over the next three years. This development comes after Ford abandoned its India operations in 2021 but retained engine manufacturing at its Sanand facility. Ford’s return aligns with India’s rising significance in global auto manufacturing, particularly for export-oriented strategies.
