I recently attended a Regional Conversation held by the Commonwealth Foundation which was part of a Commonwealth-wide process aimed at capturing the views of civil society and presenting them to leaders at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa in October of this year. Yes, there will be also be singing About the dark times Bertolt Brecht The 12th International Conference of the European Forum for Restorative Justice (EFRJ) will focus on the potential of restorative justice at dark times, times when conflict, war and violence are either present or threaten most nations, regions and communities. Conflicts, war, and violence diminish peace, justice, rights and democracy, values we often take for granted. They can nourish fears and insecurities, while proliferating human (and environmental) harms and vulnerabilities. While restorative justice is widely used to respond to interpersonal conflicts and to challenge existing punitive justice systems, this conference wishes to open the discussion on the role of restorative justice in responding to larger scale war, conflict, and violence and their implications, while at the same time transforming those structural and entrenched societal dynamics that feed them. 📢  Civil society calls on EU leaders to take decisive actions to foster a vibrant civic space, uphold democracy and safeguard fundamental rights. Led by Civil Society Europe (CSE) on #InternationalDemocracyDay2024, Global Focus alongside 415 civil society organisations - from 26 Member States and 4 EU candidate countries, sent an open letter to the upcoming Polish, Danish, and Cypriot Presidencies of the Council of the European Union, as well as the Presidents of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. The letter #EUCivicSpaceNow outlines concrete actions to promote democracy, enable, support and protect civil society, strengthen civil dialogue and protect human rights amid growing concerns over the erosion of democracy in the EU.
