As temperatures in the mountains continue rising, the snowmelt will speed up and the streams and rivers will begin to swell. Crossing swollen waterways is one of the biggest hazards in the mountains during springtime. 🌊 Crossing is generally safest in the early morning before the sun begins to speed up melting, with the water level highest during the mid-afternoon. 🌄 Here are some quick tips for safe spring stream crossing: 1️⃣ Scout out the safest spot to cross, where water is slower and shallower. 2️⃣ Use trekking poles when you cross to keep your balance. 3️⃣ Don't cross your legs while you walk across the stream or river. 4️⃣ Maintain 3 points of contact (using trekking poles), moving one foot or pole at a time. 5️⃣ Wait for the right time to cross when water levels are lowest during early morning. Where To Roam- 5 Hikes to Take on National Trails Day in the 9 Lakes of East Tennessee — MediaContacts.co — Many of the #trails in #East #Tennessee #follow the #original footsteps of the #Indigenous People and #wildlife that roamed this region prior to 1740. Sometimes called pathways, warpaths, and/ or traces, these trails served as #trade and #hunting routes for #Native #Americans and #later as #pioneer paths for western settlements. #Thanks to the efforts of #public and #private agencies such as the Tennessee #Valley Authority, #National #Wilderness #Act of 1964, #state #parks and the National #Park #Service #miles of historic trails have been preserved for conservation and public recreation. On National Trails Day, the 9 Lakes of East Tennessee is highlighting five adventure trails to hike. NORRIS, Tenn., May 31, 2024 Hiking trails in the 9 Lakes of East Tennessee serve multiple purposes- conservation, recreation, and connections to public and private land. Day hiking and backpacking are popular activities in the region for both locals and for visitors, and the choices range from strenuous mountain climbs to gentle shoreline rambles. One consistent with all of the region's trails is that each is rooted in history and culture. Foot travel pathways such as the venerable Appalachian Trail

Orca Whales spotted by fishermen off Swansea, NSW, Australia. More likely titled, bow-riding!! 🏄♂️ 🐋 Over 40,000 whales migrate north up the Humpback Highway along the NSW coast (May-November) including Humpback, Southern Right, Blue, Minke, Sperm whales, and Orca. Some can be seen without equipment cruising along our many beaches, particularly national park beaches teeming with aquatic life. Ways we can all help include - contacting local councils and political leaders regarding encouragement to remove shark nets from beaches (to decrease and end net entanglements of whale, porpoises, turtles and shark species). - encouraging sustainable and renewable fishing, aquatic harvesting and farming practises to ensure biodiversity protection. - managing and removing rubbish and pollution of all kinds from our coasts, and environments. - being cautious when operating boat and watercraft regarding speed during the migration periods. - encouraging species protection and conservation for all marine species so our magnificent oceans can thrive now and forever. Why not get out there and enjoy some whale watching, your in for a whale of a time 😃👁️🔭🐋 Source: https://lnkd.in/gJpssq5i I recommend you watch Rare sight as killer whales spotted off NSW https://lnkd.in/gfrxYUNZ
