The Truth About Graphic Designers Ever wonder what a graphic designer really does? Let's clear up some common misconceptions in a fun way! What a Graphic Designer Does Graphic designers are visual wizards. They create stunning visuals using typography, images, and layouts for both print and digital media. What a Graphic Designer Is Not A UI/UX Specialist. Graphic designers make things look beautiful. UI/UX specialists make things work beautifully. A Video Editor/Animator. Graphic designers create cool visuals for videos, but they don't cut and splice footage. That’s a video editor’s job. A Programmer. Graphic designers know what HTML and CSS are but don’t ask them to write code. They’re busy making things look amazing. And no, graphic designers aren’t aeronautical engineers. They can design a sleek airplane logo, but you don’t want them building the plane! ✈️ Graphic designers bring creativity and artistry to everything they touch. Hiring managers, please don’t ask them to be rocket scientists. Let’s celebrate their unique talents and the value they add to our world! 🎨 #graphicsdesigner #artist #hiringmanagers

🚫 Graphic Designers: Think Twice Before Accepting Unpaid Design Tasks 🚫 Dear fellow creatives, I want to share a recent experience that highlights an important issue in our industry. I made sure to dedicate 2 days of my time solely on a design task a company gave me to complete during a hiring process to an unpaid design task although I completed these 2 tasks within 2 hours each. I submitted it and unfortunately, within an hour or so of submission, I was informed that they had chosen another candidate, without any feedback on my work. This experience has led me to a crucial realization: Our time and skills are valuable, and we should not undervalue them by accepting unpaid tasks that offer no guarantee of employment or constructive feedback. Unpaid design tasks not only consume our time but also fail to respect the effort and creativity we put into our work. Let's encourage companies to adopt more respectful and transparent practices that honor our profession. Let's start a conversation about how we can promote fair treatment for graphic designers in the job market. Share your thoughts and experiences, and let's work together to make a positive change in our industry. #GraphicDesign #FairTreatment #JobMarket #ProfessionalRespect #HiringProcess #GraphicDesigners

I totally understand the need for companies to have a trial run on our skillset. However, I would have to agree with this post in saying this can be abused or at least come across as disrespectful if not handled correctly. Whenever I send my portfolio or do a sample job for a potential employer, I always ask for feedback or at least some level of compensation for me investing my time and resources into the work provided. It’s easy to leave an opinion and that is the least I want so I can improve as a designer.

A rule of thumb I was taught early in my career is to never do a design test that would take more than an hour to complete. Since then, that advice had proven to be true repeatedly. (Even when I didn’t take it.) Any company that that respects you as a professional will know that your time is much too valuable to be spent doing hours of free labor. When I chose to ignore the one hour rule, I repeatedly ended up being ghosted for low paying roles that didn’t respect my time or value their employees enough to pay a living wage. The best jobs I’ve had have had either no or short design test. Ive even been paid for a skill test! And the communication about interviews was concise and prompt. In these jobs I’ve been treated as a valuable and competent member of the team. No reputable company that will values their relationships with their employees is going to ask for free labor, or waste your time. It’s okay to say no, it’s okay to have boundaries and it’s okay to move on from opportunities where you aren’t being respected and valued. Especially if they’re already showing their character during the interview process.

The hardest part of running a business? For me, it's gotta be hiring. It's the aspect of business ownership with the most twists, turns, and ups and downs. Here's how I usually go about hiring graphic designers: 🪜Step 1: I review potential candidates' portfolios to see if their style aligns with Sur La Mur’s - because a cohesive vision is everything. 🪜Step 2: I request a quick test project to see their skills in action. 🪜Step 3: We begin a trial period in-office. One thing that's essential to me is seeing how the whole team vibes together, complementing each other's strengths and encouraging each other to do better - only good energy is on-brand at SLM. And yes, that's in-office, as in all of us working in one place to create magic. The environment of my whole team being together is essential to me. #BusinessOwners out there - what's your approach to finding the right team members? #Designers - I'm always looking to grow my team. If you're passionate about turning walls into art through the power of design, let's connect! #design #businessowner #wallpaper

SAY NO TO FREE WORK Let's Value Graphic Designers' Time (and Talent). Hey design fam, Let's talk about a hot-button issue: spec work. For those unfamiliar, spec work is when companies ask job applicants to complete a significant design task (think 3+ days) for FREE, just for a chance at an interview. This practice is not only unethical, but it also disrespects the time, talent, and financial investment graphic designers put into their craft. Here's why spec work is a bad idea for companies: It undervalues design expertise A strong portfolio showcases a designer's skills and experience. Asking for free work essentially says their portfolio isn't enough. It attracts the wrong talent: Top designers know their worth and won't waste time on unpaid projects. You'll likely attract less qualified candidates. It wastes everyone's time: The company spends time reviewing unsolicited work, and designers invest time and resources with no guarantee of a job. There's a better way! Here's how companies can find the right designer: Review portfolios thoroughly: Take the time to understand a designer's past work and fit with your brand. Conduct focused skills assessments: Short, targeted tests can assess specific skills relevant to the position. Offer a paid design challenge (optional): If absolutely necessary, consider a shorter, paid design challenge to assess specific project needs. To our fellow designers: Know your worth! Don't participate in spec work. If a company asks, politely explain your position and suggest an alternative interview process. Showcase your process in your portfolio: Highlight your design thinking and problem-solving skills, not just final products. Let's work together to create a design industry that values time, talent, and fair compensation! #stopspecwork #designerworth #fairhiring P.S. Share your thoughts and experiences with spec work in the comments!

Probably the world's shortest hiring process. Here's the plan. 1. Interested peeps can apply on this link - https://lnkd.in/g-9D6K_Q 2. On October 8 (Tuesday), if you've been shortlisted, you'll get to know by email. 3. If you've been shortlisted, you'll have till October 9 (Wednesday) 12 PM to submit a tiny design test. 4. I will hire my designer by October 9 (Wednesday), 8 PM. Some things to keep in mind. 1. This is not a freelance gig 2. I've mentioned what I can pay very clearly at the top of the form. If that doesn't make sense for you, that's perfectly fine. In which case, please don't apply. 3. Please don't DM me on LinkedIn, if you're interested. Just apply. 4. Please don't call me, even though my phone number may be public. Looking forward to hiring this awesome designer! #recruitment #hiring #wanted #design #artdirection
