In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to mark June 23 each year as #International WidowsDay. This resolution was intended to draw attention to the issues facing widowed women. They wrote: Many widows experience #poverty because they do not have access to credit, have no or limited inheritance rights, are dependent on the charity of the deceased’s relatives or are made liable for the debts of their spouse. Widows can be victims of physical and mental #violence relating to inheritance disputes and can be coerced into participating in harmful traditional practices as part of burial and mourning rites. Lack of access to healthcare can be exacerbated by poor nutrition, inadequate shelter and vulnerability to violence, as well as sexual and reproductive health needs not being addressed. Today, we celebrate the 1,200 widows and orphans who have been restored to their land in our first four years of operations at Redeem International.

Day 11 of 16 Days of Activism On Day 11 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, AfriYAN emphasizes the importance of community support in tackling GBV and promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Do you know that communities play a key role in preventing and responding to GBV? When communities come together, they create safer environments where survivors are supported and perpetrators are held accountable. AfriYAN encourages community-driven approaches that foster solidarity, awareness, and collective action to end violence and promote equality. Let’s strengthen community networks and create spaces where everyone feels empowered to speak out against GBV, protect their rights, and support those in need. #AfriYAN #16DaysOfActivism #EndGBV #CommunitySupport #YouthForChange #SRHR #GenderEquality

Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world with no social, economic or national boundaries. However, poorer women and girls in rural parts of Africa are at a higher risk and face challenges in accessing health services, employment, and information on sexual and reproductive health and GBV. Learn more on how we are mitigating GBV by empowering women/girls through education, reproductive rights awareness, and access to quality healthcare https://bit.ly/45WZklL. #womensrights #empowerment 📸 Amref Health Africa/Genaye Eshetu

In his presentation at the RHNK Conference, Ali Jillo from #PSKenya explores a critical aspect of community health: "The Role of Religious Leaders in Influencing Fertility Behavior for the Successful Adoption of Family Planning Among Young Women: A Case Study in Mandera County." By leveraging their platforms, religious leaders have the ability to dispel misconceptions, address fears, and promote accurate information about contraception. Their support not only helps bridge cultural barriers but also fosters an environment where young women feel empowered to make informed choices about their reproductive health. Ali Jillo's study highlights the strategic importance of collaboration between health practitioners, community leaders, and religious figures. By aligning public health initiatives with religious values and beliefs, PS Kenya aims to create a supportive framework that respects cultural sensitivities while advancing reproductive rights. This approach not only enhances the reach and effectiveness of family planning programs but also promotes healthier communities where individuals can thrive in accordance with their religious convictions. #RHNKConference2024 #ChildSpacing #ReproductiveHealth

Child Poverty, Reproductive Rights, and Systemic Gaps Child poverty and hunger impact millions, yet support for struggling parents remains inadequate. Policies that restrict reproductive choice often fail to address the realities of poverty, healthcare, and education. The below video highlights this contradiction—a young girl is denied adoption due to her age, while another teenager is forced to give birth. This raises an important question: How can we better support children and parents rather than focusing solely on restrictive policies? True progress means investing in social support systems, healthcare, and education to ensure every child and parent has the resources they need to thrive. True pro-life advocacy should focus on supporting children and parents, not forcing birth without support.

✊🏼 In light of the upcoming 10th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July, Victim Support Europe along with key organisations reaffirms our stance on the recent council position on the Victims' Rights Directive revision. ⚠️ Unfortunately, with this Council position, States have shown little willingness to commit to enhancing victim rights. 🔍 Unintended pregnancies have been found to double the likelihood of experiencing interpersonal violence. This alarming statistic highlights the critical need for accessible abortion care to protect women's safety and well-being. 👩⚕️ When women are unable to access safe and legal abortion services, they face increased risks of sustained physical violence from partners, exacerbating already vulnerable situations. Providing comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including abortion access, is essential in mitigating these risks and ensuring that women can make the best decisions for their health and safety. 📢 Support leaders who prioritize reproductive rights and healthcare freedom. Fight against restrictive laws that endanger women. Join Iowans for Health Liberty in advocating for comprehensive healthcare access and reproductive justice. Together, we can create a safer, more equitable society for all. ❗52% of underage girls in Burkina Faso are married before turning 18. That is 2.8 million underage girls, of which 548,200 were married before age 15. 💡 Child marriage hinders girls’ personal development and deprives them of their childhood, education, sexual and reproductive health rights. It also exposes them to an increased risk of sexual violence within marriage, with both physical and psychological consequences. Plan International Burkina Faso works to protect girls' rights in the country. Day 8: 16Days Of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Today, I'm reflecting on the socio-cultural influences on family planning. The ability to plan one's family is a fundamental human right, yet many women and girls in Africa face significant barriers in exercising this right. As I learned today, family planning is not just about preventing pregnancies, but also about empowering women and girls to take control of their reproductive health, education, and economic opportunities. However, socio-cultural factors such as religion, lack of knowledge, and social stigma can prevent women from accessing family planning services. The story of Tuma, a businesswoman from Okigwe, highlights the challenges women face when trying to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. Tuma's experience shows that lack of awareness and misunderstanding about family planning can lead to conflict and harm. It's essential that we promote education and awareness about family planning, and support women and girls in making informed decisions about their reproductive health. #FamilyPlanning #ReproductiveRights #16DaysOfActivism #EndGBV #FAMagainstGBV #FemaleandMore
