What if schools embraced the genius of learning ecosystems? This powerful roundup from Edutopia - George Lucas Educational Foundation (https://lnkd.in/gDrPnm74), shared by Babak Mostaghimi, Ed.L.D., MPP, reminds us that research is behind commitments to learning ecosystem development, even though the research into learning ecosystems is still relatively nascent. This round up points to some of the ways that learning thrives beyond the classroom walls and begs the question: how can we reimagine education to fully leverage communities, nature, and peer connections as part of a dynamic learning ecosystem? Imagine schools where students not only learn but also serve their communities, designing solutions to real-world challenges. Where science journaling in nature becomes as essential as any textbook. Where peer collaboration and mentorship are the norm, not the exception. The opportunity is here to tear down barriers and build bridges—to transform education into an ecosystem that nurtures curiosity, connection, and genius in every learner. Today I participated in the online Stanford Autumn Teaching Commons Symposium, organized by Hollie Fortkamp from The Teaching Commons Event Team. The symposium program consisted of a wealth of short presentations by teaching experts of a wide set of current educational themes, one of them being “Neurodiversity in Learning” by Melissa Tamas. By way of introduction to how teachers could organize their teaching to better accommodate different ways of learning, she read a poem written by a former student with neurodiversity. It was a very powerful way of creating both empathy and sympathy with neurodiverse learners. Definitely something to take home with me. Melissa Tamas’ advice about how to organize teaching to be neurodiverse-friendly is very much in line with Universal Design for Learning-principles, applied to higher education (except the first one): 1. Acknowledge and affirm neurodiversity, both to avoid feelings of shame for not being neurotypical and to enrich the classroom culture. 2. Support executive functioning in syllabus and teaching activities. 3. Engage students in the learning by offering different options in how to connect with the material and the course. Provide questions to focus students’ reading of syllabus. 4. Break down the teaching sessions into smaller chunks of information. In slides, in activities. 5. When possible, provide early access to reading and ensure it is readable with screen-readers. 6. Communicate expectations and tasks in clear and explicit language. Provide study guides and review sheets. And of course - the form itself - a short, easy-to-use course for faculty on how to develop your teaching to be more inclusive is also a take-away for me.
