📢📢📢 [Call for papers: Bioethical Aspects of the War in Gaza Bioethics Special Issue in 𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘴]
Guest Editors: Dr Zohar Lederman and Dr Hazem Zohny
CLOSING DATE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 1 December 2024
On Oct 7, 2023, Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza launched an attack on Israel, killing 1,161 Israelis and people of other nationalities, taking over 250 hostage, with 128 still unaccounted for. Israel responded with a major military campaign aimed at destroying Hamas, which has reportedly killed over 34,000 people in Gaza, injured nearly 77,000, and caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, including healthcare facilities. While figures are contentious, the military campaign has also reportedly led to, as of 20 Apr 2023, 54 ambulances and 31 hospitals being damaged, 118 health workers detained, and over a million Gazans displaced (numbers are taken from the WHO, occupied Palestinian territory Emergency Situation Update, issue 28). Despite the scale and gravity of these events, bioethicists have not yet deeply engaged with their far-reaching ethical implications.
This special issue aims to begin addressing this critical gap by inviting scholarly contributions that examine the conflict through a bioethical lens. We welcome submissions that meet the following criteria:
1️⃣ Analyze the ethical dimensions of the events leading up to the 2023 war, the conflict itself, and/or its aftermath and future implications;
2️⃣ Employ rigorous normative analysis and/or robust empirical study;
3️⃣ Avoid antisemitism, racism, or dehumanization of any group.
Questions and topics to be examined may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1️⃣ The role of bioethicists in armed conflicts and human rights violations, including the ongoing war;
2️⃣ The responsibility of bioethicists to speak truth to power;
3️⃣ Bioethics and international humanitarian law;
4️⃣ Bioethics and just war theory;
5️⃣ The protection of healthcare institutions during armed conflicts;
6️⃣ The ethics of treating terrorists, and specifically the right of healthcare providers to refuse providing care to terrorists;
7️⃣ Sexual assault and medical confidentiality;
8️⃣ Dual-loyalty of healthcare providers.
Submissions may include letters, commentaries, narrative analyses, empirical studies, full-length analytic essays, etc. Potential contributors are invited to consult the Guest Editors prior to submission to discuss the suitability of a potential topic or approach, but this is not a requirement.
