The Cook County Illinois criminal justice system, often referred to as "Crook County," has long been plagued by systemic racism and wrongful convictions. However, the presence of Black judges like Carol Howard has been a beacon of hope, offering a glimmer of justice in an otherwise bleak landscape. Black judges bring a unique perspective to the courtroom. They understand the lived experiences of Black defendants and can identify and challenge systemic biases. Their presence can help to ensure more fair trials and reduce the likelihood of wrongful convictions. Judge Howard's decision to grant Robert Myles a certificate of innocence highlights the importance of having judges who are committed to justice and fairness. Her willingness to challenge the status quo and to consider evidence objectively has had a significant impact on the lives of many individuals. While there are a handful of Black judges serving in Cook County, there is still a need for greater representation on the bench. By increasing the number of Black judges, we can help to address the systemic issues that have plagued the criminal justice system for decades. Despite progress, the fight for justice in Cook County continues. Cases like Robert Myles' and countless others highlight the need for ongoing reform and oversight. We are currently promoting "What Kind of Bird Can’t Fly: A Memoir of Resilience and Resurrection" by author and executive director Dorsey Nunn, forthcoming from Heyday Books on April 30, 2024. "A decade behind bars spurs fifty powerful years of political and legal battles for freedom and human rights. When Dorsey Nunn shuffled, shackled like a slave, into the California State carceral system at age nineteen, he could barely read. According to a study from the Brennan Center for Justice, disparities in the legal system have persisted, with Black Americans facing incarceration rates nearly five times higher than white Americans. This statistic raises critical concerns about the effectiveness of laws as agents of justice.
