🔋 Beyond Plastic: Tackling the Challenge of E-Waste When we think of #waste, we often focus on #plastic, but waste encompasses a wide variety of materials, including #E_waste 🔌— discarded electronic devices such as phones, computers, and appliances. E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally, containing #hazardous substances that can harm the #environment and human #health when improperly handled. ReFuse explored how structured informal markets in #Bidibidi and #Yumbe refugee settlements in #Uganda are diverting #Ewaste, alongside other materials, to local industries. This activity, conducted in collaboration with CTEN International and Makerere University, is part of the SUNNY Project, funded by the European Union and led by Technische Universität Berlin. ♻️ Together, we’re building pathways toward a more sustainable and inclusive future! #EWaste #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Innovation #SUNNYProject #ReFuse #RefugeeCamp #RefugeeSettlement

Turning Waste into Green in the Desert!🌍🌱 A project led by Kyoto University's Professor Shuichi Oyama is transforming the Sahel region of Niger. Inspired by the sight of kitchen waste scattered across the desert, Oyama and his team turned this everyday waste into a resource to restore agriculture to the deserts. By spreading household garbage across fenced-off areas, covering it with sand, and letting natural processes take over, they’ve created verdant oases in the arid landscape. The project not only restores soil but fosters local agriculture, with the greened land producing food for villagers and livestock alike. 🐄 Even termites play a role, cultivating the earth as they dig through it to reach waste, helping break down the tough soil. This approach has the potential to reduce conflicts between livestock and farmers in Niger by reducing the number of wandering cows damaging crops, offering a vision of sustainable peace. 🌿💧 With plans to expand research and create an Environmental Research Institute in Niger, this is a shining example of how innovative solutions can revitalize communities and their ecosystems. We are happy to premier the CIC Fete With the Saints video! Flashback to the 2023 and 2024 carnival seasons, where #CloseTheLoopCaribbean worked alongside St. Mary's College Alumni to green both events. Check out our video to learn how we avoided sending 500,000+ single-use plastics to landfills by substituting for compostable Vegware packaging by Hello Green, where 4,000 lbs of compostable packaging and food waste from the fetes were channeled towards the production of microbes rich compost soil instead! In addition, 25 trees were planted on IAMovement quarry rehabilitation projects. Listen to interviews from key partners and patrons and watch until the end to see important impact metrics which were reached! . . . The Close the Loop Caribbean initiative is supported by the IDB’s Bluetech for Waste Challenge, CARIRI, the European Union, and the Ministry of Planning and Development’s Shaping the Future of Innovation Challenge. 🌍 Today is international #EwasteDay! 🗑️🔌 62 billion kg of e-waste were generated globally in 2022, according to the UN's global E-Waste Monitor, and this number is expected to rise to 82 billion kg by 2030. Only a fraction is properly recycled, with the amount of e-waste growing five times faster than its collection rates. Without action, e-waste poses a significant risk to our environment and health as toxic substances from discarded electronics pollute soil, water, and air. By improving e-waste management, we can: 🔋 Recover valuable materials like metals and plastics ♻️ Reduce the environmental impact of extraction and production 🌱 Protect ecosystems and public health 💡 Raise awareness on responsible consumption and disposal Circular economy practices are vital: they ensure that valuable components are reintegrated into the production cycle, fostering a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. 🤝 Various PREVENT members facilitate impactful e-waste projects. Find a small selection in our slide deck: PLASTSAVE, AppCyclers, Vertmonde - Recycling of electronic waste in Ecuador and SetTIC! Let’s work towards a future where no #electronicwaste is left behind. 💪🌿 How are you joining the e-waste hunt? #internationalewasteday #ewaste #sustainabilitymatters

This Global Recycling Day, CropLife Africa Middle East recognises the #RecyclingHeroes transforming empty agrochemical containers and farm plastics into sustainable solutions stewarding a greener agricultural future across sub-Saharan Africa. Through pioneering community partnerships between industry, research institutes and entrepreneurs, used pesticide packaging can get safely recycled or repurposed. However, a lot more remains to be done via appropriate legislative frameworks. These circular innovations not only prevent dangerous dumping, protecting people and ecosystems. But also create youth-run microbusinesses and skilled green jobs benefitting local economies through sustainable waste management models rooted in public and private collaboration. This Global Recycling Day, we applaud the people, places and innovative activities demonstrating agriculture’s immense potential as a recycling force for good. Your efforts to close the loop while closing social gaps inspire us to dream bigger and boldly build greener communities through strategic alliances.

In Madagascar, natural resources are depleting rapidly, and waste management remains a colossal challenge. However, these two issues could turn into mutual solutions: transforming agricultural residues into compost, recycling plastics into building materials, or reusing water in agroecological systems. The circular economy is about rethinking the way we produce and consume. It means extending the lifespan of products, creating value from what we discard, and minimizing our environmental impact. But for this to become a reality, it takes more than just ideas. It requires accessible technologies, cross-sector collaborations, and, most importantly, collective willpower. At Madagascar Agricultural Group, we integrate these principles into our daily practices. Whether through agroforestry or technological innovation, we firmly believe that the circular economy is not just an alternative, but a necessity for a sustainable future. Are you ready to redefine what "waste" really means? #CircularEconomy #SustainableInnovation #ResponsibleAgriculture

Happy #EarthDay! We are playing our part by developing a range of environmentally-friendly, everyday products made from agricultural and food-processing waste. 🍎 Agricultural-food residues are an underexploited resource for the European Union and China and by making better use of these can bring significant economic, environmental and societal benefits. 📦 We are finding new ways to convert agricultural-food residues into high-value, eco-friendly products, such as food and feed ingredients and bio-based materials. 🗺 35 partners across Europe and China, are joining forces to increase agricultural sustainability, grow the bioeconomy and tackle climate change and plastic pollution and increase European / Chinese cooperation. - Innovators at Flinders University, along with Filipino scientist Denxybel Montinola, have developed seaweed-based alternatives to plastic food wrappers. - These biodegradable options offer eco-friendly packaging solutions with the potential to reduce plastic waste and environmental pollution. - Seaweed farming in the Philippines has developed a strong sense of community: farmers work sustainably and play a crucial role in the protection of marine life. - This local enterprise also empowers families by funding children's education. - Montinola has therefore called for governments to make funding more accessible to innovators, this would be pivotal in the fight against anthropogenic climate disaster https://lnkd.in/esd8fVK2
