Tonight at 11:30pm Central Time, I wrapped up an incredibly thought-provoking 2.5-hour Zoom class with my students at Golden Gate University. We explored the underlying drivers of motivation in the workplace—a topic that always sparks rich discussion. As a person who usually winds down by 9:00pm, teaching a class from 9:00 to 11:30pm is a unique and rewarding experience for me. I am very motivated and engaged at GGU. I am thrilled to teach working professionals whose supervisory and management experiences bring profound insights into our discussions. The interplay of lecture and dialogue, shaped by student contributions, creates a dynamic learning environment. My 8-minute mini-lectures are designed to be strengthened by the applied knowledge my students share, fostering a culture of mutual learning. What drives me are the people we serve—80% military and a diverse group of working professionals across all levels of management and leadership. While many universities focus on adult degree programs, I appreciate GGU's deep commitment to cultivating connections and a sense of belonging among students and faculty. At GGU, earning a degree is more than just obtaining a piece of paper; it is about building meaningful relationships with dedicated faculty members. In an era where some universities prioritize enrolling large numbers of students, GGU stands out by focusing on the value of individual relationships and the care we provide as adjunct faculty. This personalized approach taught by experts in their field is what makes GGU truly special. These are my thoughts at just shy of midnight. While I have significant time available for an 8 am to 5 pm traditional role, I just might roll in a little late on Thursday mornings to capture enough shut eye. https://ggu.edu/

With GCSE results in the morning, I dream of a time where all students will be recognised for their achievements and not only the grade 8 or 9 students, who seem to get all the ‘air time’ in the press and social media postings. Working in Special Educational Needs, I wholeheartedly understand just how challenging exams can be for some children. For many, achieving a grade 5 is a monumental accomplishment - a testament to their hard work, perseverance and determination. It is so important to remember that not all students are destined to be Grade 8 or 9 achievers, and that’s okay. Every student has their own unique strength and obstacles to overcome. Just because a child’s achievement doesn’t fit the traditional mode of ‘excellence’ that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be recognised and celebrated. Let’s broaden the definition of success and celebrate every students journey, not just the destination. After all, for some, the greatest victory isn’t in the top grades - it’s the progress they make and the challenges they conquer along the way.

I'm not bragging.. but I am! 🥳Thrilled to see that Bishop Grosseteste University has been rated #1 in the Times Higher Education Rankings based on the recent National Student Survey (NSS) for overall satisfaction! This achievement is a testament to the dedication, passion, and hard work of the entire university community. It's particularly heartening to see that smaller universities like ours are leading the way. When I first took a post at BGU people didn't think much of this small University but the league tables tell a story.. small universities have triumphed. Here's why: ✅️ personalised learning. Smaller class sizes mean more individual attention, tailored support and a more effective learning environment ✅️ Small and strong community. It really is lovely to be on campus and there's a supportive and inclusive atmosphere ✅️ Adaption and creativity. We can be quick to respond to change, needs and get creative in our approaches to teaching. We adapt to each characteristic group/year group and I love that I'm able to embed creativity as a tool in teaching. ✅️ student centered. We listen and respond to feedback (which is sometimes a quick show of hands in a classroom and at others a more robust survey). Student needs is always the focus. ✅️ a different way of teaching. I really do know the names of every single one of my students. I become part of that journey from the moment they enrol to when they graduate and go through the highs and lows with them throughout their three years. This recognition is not just an award, but a reflection of why we do what we do! Thank you to everyone in the BGU community who made this possible 🌟 #HigherEducation #UniversityRanking #StudentSatisfaction #EducationExcellence #ProudMoment

Building Stronger University Communities: Innovative Programs for Students I was exploring some innovative reward programs in higher education, and here’s how leading institutions are making a difference: 🔸 Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Rewards: Students earn points for participating in campus activities, which can be redeemed for tuition discounts and exclusive experiences. This approach keeps students engaged and connected to the university community. 🔸 National University of Singapore’s NUSmart Rewards: Students are rewarded for making sustainable and healthy choices. This program encourages positive habits and supports environmental goals. 🔸 University of South Florida’s Bull Rewards: Students earn perks like priority seating and access to special facilities by attending events and getting involved on campus. It creates a vibrant and interactive campus life. 🔸 Western Sydney University’s Unlimited Program: Discounts and special offers foster a strong sense of community and enhance student satisfaction and retention. These programs go beyond traditional rewards, strengthening student engagement, improving retention, and building lasting relationships. Well-designed initiatives can also serve as marketing tools, leveraging students as ambassadors for the university and creating a more authentic and impactful connection with prospective students. This means we can have different groups under the main program, with students in each group dedicated to managing social media by creating videos and photos that reflect their genuine interests. This approach will reach larger audiences and make a significant impact. #HigherEducation #StudentEngagement #UniversityLife #CommunityBuilding #Innovation

Reflections from from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Presidents and Chancellors Conference last week: I felt so lucky to have been there among leaders in public higher education, learning and participating in conversation alongside them throughout the week. Thank you to Kaplan for the support in sending us and allowing me to dream up a roundtable conversation that would connect the work we are all doing within higher education! Leading a roundtable conversation around how President's and Chancellors define student success per stakeholder group, it was enlightening to see and then discuss how there are differing priorities depending on the stakeholder (administration, students, funders/government, and staff/faculty). Even with just four priorities to organize (enrollment, retention, graduation, and career outcomes) the cards were re-shuffled over and over depending on the group we called out. It shed a light on the impossible tasks of whose priorities take precedent, how difficult it is to budget around varying priorities, and how important it is to listen to stakeholders. Having worked in higher education serving under a President for 18 years as a staff member, it was such a pivotal moment for me to be in front of so many with the same goals relative to finding ways to partner and add value from a different vantage point. Finally, and importantly, there were several main topics that came up from speakers and in conversations over and over. What is most important right now according to public colleges and universities leadership? ✅ Career Outcomes, Workforce Development, & Meeting Workforce Needs Locally ✅ Politics, Divisive Political Feelings and Unrest on Campus ✅ Student Success & Supporting Students in Gen Z and Gen Alpha (who are getting ready to start applying to colleges soon!) ✅ Enrollment Challenges and Opportunities to Re-Think How We Do Post-Secondary Education Opportunities ✅ AI & Technology I know I'll continue to share some reflections and data from conversations throughout the week, but the whole conference was outstanding, the sessions were engaging and thought-provoking, and being there made me realize how much I am in the right place for me in leading this work for Kaplan around All Access to connect student success and career. #studentsuccess #highereducation #universitypresident #universityleadership #techineducation #studentoutcomes #graduation #enrollment #workforcedevelopment #aascu

To navigate this landscape effectively, it's essential to embrace what I term the "Five Pillars Active in university." These pillars encapsulate crucial aspects that contribute to a fulfilling and prosperous university experience, laying the foundation for future success. 1. Academic Excellence 2.
