A couple months ago, we provided community households with Mchakato bins, and we wanted to do a follow-up activity to hear the feedback. Overall, it was mostly positive! We also visited another local shop and spoke to them about the benefits of #wastemanagement, and afterwards, we provided them a Mchakato Bin. From our conversation, we learned that they were dumping their waste around their shop which created an unpleasant environment for their neighbors. Lastly, we helped pick out the #organicwaste from their dump site. They were extremely happy to receive the bins and promised to cooperate with us! Change isn't something that is quick, but a process that requires dedication on all sides. We are thrilled to have the support of the community! #communitybased #climateaction

👋 Introducing BATCOM – a start-up community composting scheme for Brimscombe and Thrupp in Stroud, Gloucestershire. This #CoopFortnight, we’re celebrating #coops like BATCOM for the altogether different way they create grassroots solutions, boost communities and meet local needs. 📍 BATCOM was set up to solve a local problem. 👨🌾 “In our area we have lots of people with gardens and allotments. But a lot of them live where the council collection lorries can’t access. So they have bonfires, compost themselves or drive their green waste to the local tip, 15 miles away,” said BATCOM co-founder Shelley Tester. 🚛 ❌ “Transporting green waste makes our carbon footprint as a local community quite big. Having a composting site here, we can create circular economy where people can bring waste that we turn into something useful and valuable for the community.” 🏚️ In its embryonic stages, BATCOM plans to redevelop an abandoned industrial estate, with composting bays due to be installed at the end of the summer. 🫶 “In the longer term, we would like to develop the site beyond composting, to include other related activities,” said Shelley. “It will bring people together. It will give them a sense of being able to do something about the climate crisis. It will be great for people’s mental and physical health too.” ♻️ Like many co-ops, BATCOM is responsible and sustainable – and research has found that democratic businesses in the UK are 75% more likely to have net zero plans in place. If you want a better future for the planet, back our Call for #CoopGrowth! https://buff.ly/4eHtCN3 #comshares #coops #communityowned #climateaction #composting #gardening #allotment #allotments #stroud

NYC has introduced curbside residential composting in Brooklyn and Queens. Residents now possess brown bins to collect food-based waste. NYC’s city council voted in June 2023 to make separation of food waste mandatory with rollout in the whole city set to begin in fall 2024. Enforcement of the composting will begin in April 2025, with residents facing fees for not complying. This waste will now be used to create fertilizer and electricity. How does this impact restaurants in NYC? By implementing city-wide composting, NYC is decreasing the overall environmental footprint of the restaurant industry in NYC by allowing customers to compost at home. Implementing curbside composting across the city also sets an example for other cities to follow in the future. #dinegreen #sustainability #greenrestaurant #greenrestaurantassociation #gogreen #reducereuserecycle #restaurants #food #sustainableliving #donate #environment #motherearth #environmentallyfriendly #nature #pollution #eatlocal #plasticfree #certifiedgreenproduct #greenchemicals #certifiedgreenrestaurant #recycle #sustainable #climatechange #ecofriendly #zerowaste #nonprofit #sustainabilitytip #earthday #earthmonth

"Community compost makes good soil... it enriches the earth... and it grows social bonds, civic awareness and a healthier society." Thank you Samantha MacBride and Clare Miflin for writing such a great piece on the widely discussed topic of eliminating community composting in NYC. Some of the key points to understand better why community composting is so important for NYC: - in New York City, community composting grew out of grassroots efforts to reclaim disinvested neighborhoods in the fiscal crisis of the 1970s and ’80s. - community composting has grown to involve dozens of partners, including nonprofits like the Lower East Side Ecology Center, Big Reuse, Earth Matter and GrowNYC as well as parks, community gardens, schools and citizen volunteer groups. - every year, they manage hundreds of drop-off sites, process over 4,000 tons of food waste, engage thousands participants in activities, and provide education and outreach to more than 600,000 New Yorkers. - the resulting compost is used in the communities where it is produced, nourishing gardens, parks and trees. - community compost makes good soil — literally and figuratively. It enriches the earth at a time when the world’s soils are degrading at an alarming rate, and it grows social bonds, civic awareness and a healthier society. - it’s also a key partner in the city’s broader green infrastructure and climate resilience plans. over the past decade. #communitycomposting
So happy to share our ideas on why NYC Community Composting has to be saved to help us transition to a more resilient, green and equitable city. Thanks Samantha MacBride and Kriston Capps. Please share widely to help save! Comment, tag anyone you think should read it, and repost. https://lnkd.in/ezpxGfCi #compost , #zerowaste

Litter costs the government £1 billion+ a year. 💸 So why are most bins a bit rubbish? 🤷 I never paid much attention to bins before I worked at Hubbub. Well, believe me when I say I've made up for lost time 😉. A lot of what you might assume is wrong. For example: • More bins does not equal less litter • Tough anti–litter messages can increase littering • "Mixed recycling" bins might not be a great way to collect mixed recycling We've worked out an approach to designing bins that leans heavily on data-driven insights, and chucks in a huge dollop of playful creativity (a bit like the rest of our work, then). They put a smile on your face but, more importantly, they work better than the alternatives. Never seen a disco bin? A giant voting bin? 🗳️ Swipe below to check out five of our favourite Hubbub-designed bins. ⬇️ (Also: did you get the Sir Mix-a-Lot joke in the image below? I'm such a useless judge of which musical references are going to fly...) ++ P.S. I'm CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. We create campaigns with business, government and civil society that inspire environmental action. Bins popping up in remote areas are at the taxpayer/ratepayer cost. The service cannot be viable and how much really goes into recycling. Most viable solution is to pick up with the one truck and take to landfill. In reality the taxapayer and rate payer gets slugged and the product still goes to landfill. As long as the circular wish recyclers can media clap,everyone-everything is ok. Meanwhile western countries are still dumping waste in the oceans/rivers as waste water. That waste contains plastic waste from sources like polyester non-woven and compostable packaging. Truth telling must happen before the "feel good" logos on multiple bins on your walking track.
Does anyone else notice it when new bins pop up? 🗑️ This weekend, while walking along Jetty Road, Brighton, I spotted City of Holdfast Bay latest addition: a shiny new FOGO bin nestled between two waste bins near the jetty's entrance. With cafes along the street serving up takeaway in compostables, it's a welcome initiative to nudge residents and visitors towards proper waste disposal. And here's a bonus: those green bags for doggie 💩 can now go straight in too! Hopefully those fishing on the jetty will also take those extra few steps to use this green bin for their fishing scraps rather than the waste bin at the end of jetty. I love to see infrastructure responding to community needs. Fingers crossed, this encourages more organic waste into FOGO bins! ♻️ If you're ever not sure where your waste goes, whichbin.sa.gov.au has you covered!

40 schools throughout #WesternAustralia will share in more than $113,000 in grants to fund initiatives that will help avoid and recover #waste. The #WasteSortedSchools program provides funding to facilitate waste education and infrastructure to improve waste avoidance, resource recovery, and hands-on learning experiences linked to the school curriculum. The funds will be used for a range of projects including setting up recycling hubs, worm farms, chicken coops, bin systems and vegetable gardens linked to composting and support for waste-free canteen lunches.
