Professor Glyn Elwyn: “What people really want is a conversation with a clinician who knows what they are talking about..” Professor Glyn Elwyn has spent a lifetime exploring Decision Aids and Shared Decision Making. He is a clinician, and researcher at The Dartmouth Institute leading an international interdisciplinary team studying shared decision making into clinical settings, which include collaboRATE, a patient experience measure of shared decision making, and Observer OPTION-5, for use on recorded data. Glyn was previously Professor of Primary Care at the Swansea Medical School (2002–2005) before being appointed Research Professor at Cardiff University where in collaboration with Professor Adrian Edwards, he led the Decision Laboratory. In a lifetime committed to shared decision making and evidence based medicine, he also developed Option Grids™ patient decision aids, licensed to EBSCO in 2017. He holds chair appointments at the Scientific Institute for Quality of Healthcare, University Nijmegen Medical Centre, Netherlands; UniSante University in Lausanne, Switzerland; Cochrane Institute for Primary Care and Public Health, Cardiff University; and at University College London. In acht Wochen ist es soweit. Der 15. DGP Kongress (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Palliativmedizin e.V.) findet dieses Jahr in Aachen statt. Meine Kollegin Dr. Sarah Veldemann von der Uniklinik RWTH Aachen wird eine spannende Studie zum langjährigen Einsatz von Telemedizin in der SAPV vorstellen. Bei Home Care Aachen e.V. ist Telemedizin schon seit über 5 Jahren im Einsatz. Die Zahlen der letzten drei Jahre wurden nun von Sarah wissenschaftlich ausgewertet: 🎉 3 Jahre Televisiten in der SAPV in Aachen: Welche Patienten profitieren von Telemedizin? 🎉 Unter der Leitung des Teams der Klinik für Anästhesiologie der Uniklinik RWTH Aachen und der Home Care Aachen e.V. wurden zwischen März 2020 und März 2023 insgesamt 752 Televisiten bei 333 Patienten durchgeführt. 🧑⚕️ Ergebnisse auf einen Blick: Durchschnittsalter der Patienten: 72,9 Jahre Verweildauer in der SAPV: Median 73 Tage Häufigste Symptome: Schwächegefühl, Fatigue, Schmerzen, Appetitverlust, Dyspnoe Besonders während des zweiten Corona-Lockdowns (Oktober bis Dezember 2020) war die Nutzung der Telemedizin am intensivsten, während sie nach Aufhebung der Maßnahmen kurzzeitig zurückging. Langfristig hat sich jedoch eine regelmäßige Nutzung etabliert. 📈 Fazit: Televisiten sind besonders wertvoll für multimorbide und pflegeintensive Patienten, die über einen längeren Zeitraum betreut werden. Sie ermöglichen eine engmaschige Betreuung und regelmäßige ärztliche Check-Ups, die die Standardversorgung optimal ergänzen. 💡 Zukunft der Palliativversorgung: Telemedizin wird sich auch in traditionellen "High-Touch-Low-Tech"-Bereichen weiter etablieren und langfristig von Vorteil für Patienten und medizinisches Personal sein. #Palliativmedizin #Telemedizin #SAPV #Aachen #DocsInClouds #TeleDoc

📢 A recent congressionally mandated report from The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that there is a lack of equitable representation in U.S. clinical trials, which compounds disparities in health. Why is this important? Access to Effective Medical Interventions: Lack of representation can lead to certain populations not benefiting from new treatments. Health Disparities: Underrepresented groups face increased health disparities due to exclusion from clinical trials. Economic Impact: The cost of these disparities is projected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars in the U.S. How do we address this? The Multicancer Early Detection (MCED) Consortium has published key considerations and recommendations for building health equity in clinical research studies.
