A recent study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) highlights that the UK cannot achieve its 'net-zero' target through the use of #Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (#BECCS). The findings actually indicate that the technology would increase forest logging and greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions. NRDC's study also found that: - BECCS will not be carbon negative by 2050, cannot offset the carbon emissions of other sectors, and will actually increase the U.K.’s contribution to climate change. - Sourcing biomass at the scale needed under the UK Biomass Strategy would rely on vastly unrealistic amounts of land, undermining forests' natural carbon removal function and #biodiversity. - BECCS simply doesn’t exist at the commercial scale needed to implement the U.K.’s current climate plan. While power companies state that by 2030 they will be able to capture several million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, a recent pilot project by Drax only captured 27 tonnes over 90 days. As the Expert Group working on the #EU Carbon Removals Certification Framework (#CRCF) is currently discussing how to account for #CarbonRemovals from BECCS and other technologies like Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (#DACCS), it’s critical to ensure these #FalseSolutions don’t contribute to even more carbon emissions! The European Commission announced a $30 million (€28.5m) call for proposals to provide funding for carbon removal projects in the EU. A Debate Rages Over the Putative Environmental Benefits of the ARCH2 ‘Hydrogen Hub’ in Appalachia Proponents say carbon emissions from a process to produce hydrogen from fracked natural gas would be sequestered. Environmentalists counter that carbon capture technology is unproven, expensive and, at best, of minimal benefit. CEETTAR Priorities for the European Elections: Priority 5: 5. Ensure the sustainable management of all European forests, which respects the differences between member states forest environment. The EU needs to secure forest resilience to natural hazards, foster afforestation, and tree planting, and treat young forest to select species resilient to climate change. There should be a greater use of all products and services associated with the forest, with no place for waste, and the use and recognition of primary wood biomass as renewable energy source

🌍 Wastewater: A New Path for Carbon Removal 🌿 With rising competition for traditional BECCS feedstocks like harvested wood, forestry, and crop wastes, exploring alternatives like wastewater for carbon removal offers a unique edge. Utilizing wastewater as a CDR method not only helps avoid methane emissions but also brings economic, environmental, and climate benefits, including improved local air quality. Plus, wastewater is readily available in every city, making it easier to scale. Recognizing this potential, Inherit Carbon Solutions has partnered with Veas , Norway’s largest wastewater treatment plant, to launch a pioneering carbon capture and sequestration from wastewater. This initiative, starting at the Slemmestad facility, aims to capture over 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from the wastewater of Oslo, Asker, Bærum, and Nesodden residents. 🇪🇺 Last week, the European Commission's 5th Meeting of the Carbon Removal Expert Group gathered the carbon removal community across the ecosystem to discuss methodologies under the Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming (#CRCF) framework, aiming to scale high-integrity carbon removals across Europe. 💡 Key discussions included methodologies and technical specifications for DACCS, Bio-CCS/BECCS, and Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR), as well as sustainability in biomass sourcing and MRV systems. ➕ Additional developments include new funding opportunities through existing programs, potential public-private partnerships, and future workshops prioritizing methodologies for mineralization, marine CDR, and enhanced weathering. 🤝 The Carbon Business Council looks forward to continued engagement with European experts to advance efforts that align with global climate goals and ensure a level playing to spur innovation in carbon removal.
