Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria 🇳🇬 Democracy Day is upon us once again, but it's hard to feel celebratory when our nation's democratic ideals seem so distant. And yet, I still believe in the power of democracy to transform our beloved country. I still have hope that one day, we will restore meaning to concepts like freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the rule of law. Hope that one day, leaders will emerge who truly represent the will of the people rather than self-interest. It will not be easy. Positive change never is. We may have lost our way, but the ideals of democracy still burn brightly in the hearts of Nigerians who yearn for a better future. It's up to us, as engaged citizens, to fan those flames into an inextinguishable fire for good governance. So today, let's use this Democracy Day not just to lament how far we've fallen but to renew our resolve. Our diversity can be our strength, not a curse, if only we allow it. Our voices may seem small but united. They can move mountains. I dream of a Nigeria where democracy is more than just a word - it's a living, breathing force for human rights, justice, and inclusive prosperity. It's the dream that lives on despite all our trials. And it's why, even in the darkest moments, I still have hope. ✊🏽" Happy Democracy Day, Nigerians ! #Happydemocracy #Nigeriademocracy #unity

As we gather today to commemorate Democracy Day in Nigeria, we honor the principles that form the bedrock of our nation: freedom, equality, and the power of the people. 🌟 Freedom: Democracy grants us the precious gift of freedom—the ability to express our thoughts, beliefs, and aspirations without fear. Yesterday, as Nigeria marked its 25th anniversary of democracy, Prof. Lilian Orogbu, a member of the House of Representatives, raised a critical question during the Green Chamber debate: How has democracy impacted the lives of Nigerians? She noted that after 25 years of democratic governance, the country should be celebrating achievements in food security, national security, healthcare, and education. Despite facing opposition from some members of the House, Prof. Orogbu emphasized the need for the government to significantly improve its efforts, as democracy has yet to make a substantial difference in the lives of many Nigerians. This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by those advocating for accountability and transparency. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right for all Nigerian citizens, and a true democracy allows for open expression without fear of repercussions. As Nigeria commemorates its 25th year of democracy, WIDEF supports the call for political leaders to deliver the benefits of democratic governance to the people. We share Prof. Orogbu's vision for a Nigeria where democracy is genuinely practiced to provide quality governance that enhances the lives of its citizens. #WIDEF #NigeriaDemocracyat25 #Democracy #Nigeria #CivilSociety #CivicSpace #FreedomofExpression
