ACAS II, the current iteration, interrogates Mode C and Mode S transponders on nearby aircraft, tracking their altitude and range to issue appropriate alerts to pilots. Operating autonomously from aircraft navigation, flight management systems, and Air Traffic Control (ATC) ground systems, the only commercially available implementation of the ICAO standard for ACAS II is the TCAS II version 7.1 (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System).
