Seeing Without Revealing. How to make everything visible but also invisible? Visual Horror and Lighting (Part 3.1) The Challenges of Low Key Images. The gameplay problem. In many games, a key task for Lighting Artists is to create a comfortable visual experience for players. However, in horror genres, the objective shifts to deliberately creating uncomfortable conditions, presenting almost opposite challenges. Practically, to achieve a successful visual horror effect, it’s essential to balance between comfort and discomfort for the player, making the environment visible enough to navigate while maintaining an ominous atmosphere conducive to suspense and fear. It's essential for the game environment to be navigable and recognizable, yet not fully disclosed, leaving room for hidden threats. Complete darkness in the game, a black screen, disconnects players from the gameplay (if it is not an experimental project with sound-based gameplay), as they cannot see where to go or interact with objects. While briefly used, this can trigger panic; darkness extended for too long may lead players to adjust their screen settings or even stop playing. This balance between visibility and concealment crafts a tension essential for the horror gaming experience, emphasizing the critical role of lighting in player engagement. The technical problem. Also there is a problem with the black levels. Players will be using different devices: like monitors, projectors or TVs. They all have different contrast and the level of black. For example: OLED monitors/TVs will likely see 0 value displayed as true black, because OLEDs technologically do not have backlight. It could cause some artifact or visual inconsistency. Can be fixed easily by adjusting the gamma. For the majority of home projectors, black level will be the brightness of the surface we are projecting on + a bit of ambient fill from the projector. In this situation, black colour that we see is purely achieved by the dynamic range(contrast) of the projector (difference between the darkest and brightest parts of an image). In other words, the brighter projector is - the deeper blacks are. If the image is dark and low contrasty - we will have flat, barely readable picture and it doesn't matter how brighter we adjust the projector - it will be lifting our shadows with an ambient fill as well. #horror #videogames #horrorgame #horrorart #gameart #lighting #gamedev #lightingdesign

🌟 Diving into the Magic of Audio-Driven Game Design 🌟 🚀 A few days ago, I embraced the challenge of creating a game in 48 hours under the theme "Outer Space". Driven by recent personal experiences and as part of an experiment, I decided to create a game using only sounds. This experiment led to the creation of The AudioNaut—a 5-minute audio game built with Unity, where you play as an astronaut needing to repair audio stations before the oxygen in your suit runs out. 🎧 The AudioNaut is designed to be fully accessible to visually impaired individuals, with no graphical content on the game screen. This approach was based on thorough research into accessible games and prioritizing accessibility above all else. 🌌 This project was a departure from my usual focus on visual elements, and it has opened my eyes to the powerful role of sound in gaming. It’s been a fun and magical experience discovering how immersive sound can be without traditional graphics. 🎮 I encourage everyone to experience The AudioNaut and see how sound alone can create a compelling game environment. Your feedback is invaluable and will help shape future projects! https://lnkd.in/dSWuejhu #AccessibleGaming #AudioGames #GameAccessibility #InclusiveDesign #TechForAll

🎮 **The Necessity of a Well-Developed Visual Style in Games** 🖼️ 🔍 No matter how polished and perfect Supercell's games are, they come with a flaw that seems to have permeated the entire mobile gaming industry: a lack of distinct visual style. Why is this concerning? Allow me to dive into my reasons. 🎨 Every game is defined by a set of parameters that engross the player, with visuals being a crucial element. While they may not hold the same weight as in movies or art, undervaluing them almost certainly spells doom for the game. 🤔 So, what's the "dilemma" with Supercell? It's not so much a dilemma as a strategic move in a fiercely competitive mobile market: crafting visuals that appeal to the masses, a "one size fits all" approach. The rationale is clear - the more universally appealing the visuals, the broader the potential player base. Consequently, Supercell's game designs, interfaces, and overall aesthetic are intentionally generic and pleasing, aiming to captivate any and every gamer. This strategy has led to an industry-wide mimicry of Supercell's visual style. Success? Perhaps for brand visibility, but a definitive no for industry innovation. And I don't blame exactly Supercell, they are just "ideal example". 🛠️ This ubiquitous "suitable for all" visual style has unfortunately fostered a culture of complacency. Why invest effort in tailoring visuals to match a game's genre, theme, gameplay, or narrative when a ready-made, universal solution exists? This mindset has even affected the artistic community, with many artists finding themselves confined to this singular style due to its prevalence in online resources and educational courses. The result? A mobile gaming landscape where uniqueness is scarce, and most high-quality games bear a striking resemblance to Supercell's offerings. 🌄 Yet, it's imperative to remember that visuals are meant to evoke emotion, to immerse and transport. The beauty of a sunset, the tranquility of a seaside, the awe of a starry night—each is distinct and cherished for its uniqueness. This diversity, this uniqueness, is what I find lacking in today's mobile games. What are your thoughts? #MobileGaming #GameDesign #VisualStyle #GamingIndustry #ArtInGaming #GameDevelopment #UserExperience #InnovationInGaming

People often ask what does the logo mean or stand for? 2Four created the logo with the following idea behind it: “The Guardian of the Groove” The logo’s sharp, angular design resembles a protective crest. This is the emblem of the “Guardian of the Groove,” representing how “Jams & Joysticks” guards the spirit of creativity, whether through gaming, music and beyond. The central eye-like symbol watches over the community, ensuring that every stream and show brings fresh, vibrant energy and keeps the groove alive. In the very near future you will start to see and learn more about the “Guardian of the Groove.” #gaming #gamer #videogames #esports #esportsindustry #gamingindustry #gamedevelopers #gamedevs #gamedesigners #animator #gamingaudio #musicsync #artists #voiceovertalent #atlanta #atlantagaming #esportsteams #esportscoaches #gamingcommunity #gamergirl #esportseducation #youtube #twitch #dreamhack #dreamhackatl #blacktech #blackingaming #blacktechnology #hashtagblacklinkedin

[💡Color #accessibility quick tips] Everyone has a different perception of colors. Age, tobacco, medication, certain conditions like Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) are only a few of the factors that make colors a very personal matter. So, how do you take this into consideration when designing your video game? Here are 7 quick tips. 1️⃣ Don’t rely on color alone If color is used to convey information (like who are the allies and who are the enemies), use other signs too, like shapes, symbols, or texts. 2️⃣ Avoid reference to colors only Instructions like “push the red button” are pretty useless if you can’t tell what is actually red. Prefer “push the red square button” for instance. 3️⃣ Avoid color pairings that can be easily confused The most common CVD form makes red and green hard to distinguish. Use less problematic pairs, like blue and orange. 4️⃣ “Color blindness filters” are not solutions Design tools like Photoshop and Figma have filters to help persons without CVD understand what a visual looks like when you have it. But they don’t actually “fix” your design for CVD. 5️⃣ Color Blindness corrections A first step (like in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, by Ubisoft) is to propose different color schemes based on different archetypes. Going further (like in Far Cry 6, also by Ubisoft) is to allow players to select the colors that suit them best. 6️⃣ Show effects of customization Without having already played the game, it’s difficult to know what is the appropriate setting. Show previews of the corrections in representative screenshots of in-game situations. 7️⃣ Test with a variety of players No matter how careful your design is, only people with color perception differences can tell you if it works for them. Ensure that your playtests include as diverse players as possible! Ubisoft Game Accessibility Nexus Edd Coates #a11y #GameDev #GamesAccessibility
