Missed our event on Monday or still feeling inspired by it? Read our event #recap written by our mining research lead, Zolzaya Jargalsaikhan. The event, "Mining for a Sustainable Future: A Symposium on Responsible Supply Chain," brought together #diverse voices to explore the vital role of mining in our society. Key Highlights: ✍🏽 Storytelling: Christopher Pollon and Katherine Standefer shared compelling narratives illuminating the mining industry and metal supply chains, highlighting their profound impact on our lives. 🔉 Panel Discussion: Scott Dunbar emphasized, "If we are going to have sustainable mining, everyone needs to be engaged in sustainable mining." This dialogue highlighted the importance of linking research, innovation, and corporate responsibility. 🎓 Research Pitch: Postdocs and PhDs from UBC presented groundbreaking research, showcasing innovative solutions for sustainable mining Juliette Engelhart, Elaheh Ghasemi, Mehdi Golzar Ahmadi, @Rohan sharma We are excited to continue our efforts with a 4-month research project mapping innovation and investment in the Canadian mining ecosystem. Please reach out to Zolzaya. Thank you to all who attended and engaged in these critical conversations. Let's keep working together for a sustainable future in mining. https://lnkd.in/gaqNk7s3

Does the world need green(er) energy at the cost of other environmental assets? Probably not. The question leads me to think about the balance and how to achieve it. One answer lies in exploring further alternatives. Picking the lesser evil, investing in research, finding alternatives, and keeping an open mind to adapt to newer and better ways. #Biodiversity #Lithium #Sustainablity
Dear Sustainable Miners and Explorers - I'm excited to share this piece of research I've been waiting patiently for! As part of our quarterly, S&P Global Sustainable1 just released - Rocks and hard places: The ecosystem risks of mining for energy transition minerals 🔦 The article explores the global transition metal mining industry and finds that 71% of all transition mineral mines occur within ecosystems that are significant for the preservation of biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services. 🔋 Lithium and graphite mines pose the greatest risk to ecosystems globally despite comprising a small share of all transition mineral mines. I'd like to congratulate my colleagues Joerg Rueedi and Simone Rossi as authors on this piece - great work! https://lnkd.in/dWypHw4H #biodiversity #sustainablemining #Lithium #transitionmetals #criticalminerals

I'm thrilled to share our latest #openaccess research article in Ambio, "Visiting Mine Reclamation: How Field Experience Shapes Perceptions of Mining", co-authored by Vojtěch Barták & Markéta Hendrychová. 📢 🔎 In our study, we recognized the widespread negative public opinion surrounding #mining and sought to understand how direct exposure to mining activities could influence these perceptions. Through organized field trips to open pit #coal mines and their #reclamation sites in the Czech Republic ⛏🍃, we observed significant attitudinal shifts among 148 university students: 1️⃣ Students' neutrality towards mining decreased. 2️⃣ Perception of mining as a temporary and disruptive activity increased. 3️⃣ Concerns about social conflicts in mining areas were reduced. 4️⃣ Support for ecological restoration efforts post-mining increased. These results highlight the powerful impact of #firsthand #experiences in altering perceptions and underscore the importance of engaging the public in reclamation activities to foster more informed and constructive views on mining practices. 📜 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eFkcWUQD #Research #Mining #Sustainability #PublicPerception #EnvironmentalEducation #UniversityStudents #EcologicalRestoration #CzechRepublic

I'm pleased to share our new study "Decarbonization and social justice: The case for artisanal and small-scale mining". Based on in-person discussions with artisanal and small-scale miners in the DRC, we identify pathways to inclusive regulation of ASM and propose avenues for future research and interventions. Ultimately, ASM must be understood as a central social justice issue of our time, especially in the context of global decarbonization efforts. We must stop pathologizing ASM mining and miners. https://lnkd.in/eQ3Du-Mv Brandon Marc Finn Joshua Newell University of Michigan- School for Environment and Sustainability University of Michigan

As the demand for minerals essential to energy transition continues to rise, mining companies face significant environmental challenges that must be addressed. According to new research by S&P Global Sustainable1, current sustainable mining practices that help mitigate the adverse impacts on ecosystems and communities, are falling short. By participating in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), your company has the opportunity to: - Demonstrate its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship - Gain valuable, data-driven insights to enhance sustainability strategies and programs, and - Better understand and adopt best practices for responsible mining from leaders in the industry Learn more about the process and benefits of active CSA participation: https://lnkd.in/dtazD5e
