Rewilding: A Journey from Farm to Wildlife Haven 🌿🦊 I've just finished reading about Derek Gow's incredible transformation of his Devon farm into a 300-acre rewilding sanctuary. It's a powerful reminder of what's possible when we commit to restoring our native ecosystems. Gow's story is both inspiring and eye-opening: • He's created habitats for beavers, water voles, lynx, wildcats, and more • His work has been crucial in reintroducing species like the white stork • He's even raised a sofa-loving wild boar piglet! 🐗 But it's not just about the animals. Gow's journey highlights the urgent need to address biodiversity loss in the UK. He paints a vivid picture of a landscape that could be: ✅ Teeming with diverse wildlife ✅ Echoing with the calls of long-lost bird species ✅ Resilient and self-sustaining His message is clear: We have the knowledge and ability to reverse the decline of our native species. Throwback Thursday: Wetland Creation in Graveney 🌿 In 2022, in collaboration with our sister company FGS Pilcher, we embarked on a transformative 91-acre wetland creation project aimed at enhancing habitats within a site recognised as both a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Our team utilised excavators and tracked dumpers to carry out essential works, including the creation of large scrapes, foot drains, and bunding. These vital elements are designed to facilitate the re-wetting of the grassland, ultimately fostering a thriving ecosystem. As we reflect on this significant initiative, we are optimistic about the positive impact it will have on local wildlife. The newly created wetland is expected to serve as a sanctuary for a diverse array of species, including breeding and wintering wildfowl, waders, water voles, and various rare invertebrates and plants. Our commitment to environmental stewardship is at the forefront of our operations, and we are proud to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity in our region. From 1984 to 2022, the removal of wild Florida Panthers reminds us of the urgent need to preserve what remains. Florida has countless abandoned or underutilized areas, like parts of Lake Okeechobee, where conservation efforts could be redirected to help restore wildlife habitats. As we move forward with development, we must balance growth with preserving the ecosystems that make Florida unique. Update - NFWF's $15 million Conservation Partners Program due in 50 days. I was excited to read the republishing of the Conservation Partners Program (CPP) Request for Proposals (RFP) by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). This updated RFP now expands geographic eligibility to include a new Western Grazing Lands category, covering an additional 12 Western states. The Conservation Partners Program aims to provide technical assistance to producers on working lands. They will award approximately $15 million in competitive grants to accelerate the voluntary adoption of regenerative agriculture principles and conservation practices on private working lands in priority geographies, which are: the Great Plains, Upper Mississippi River Basin, Great Lakes Basin, and the Western Grazing Lands. The deadline is August 14th. Today we are celebrating #WorldEnvironmentDay! One of the key elements of this year's theme is land restoration. A hallmark of our work is facilitating the stewardship of our natural world through restoration, exploration, and preservation. We are committed to protecting the 80 acres of woods, open meadows, vital wetlands, and ponds spanning our site. All year-round, visitors to Grace Farms enjoy walks on our nature trails to experience the awe and wonders of nature. Our multi-generational programs provide a meaningful opportunity to explore the natural world and underscore the importance of caring for and respecting the environment and essential wildlife, from learning about vital pollinators to exploring how plants flourish in nature, and more. The National Wildlife Federation has certified Grace Farms as a Wildlife Habitat and we've also been named a certified Monarch Way Station by Monarch Watch. Additionally, we signed the Pollinator Pledge with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, an international nonprofit that protects the natural world by conserving invertebrates such as bees and their habitats. We are proud to be a New Canaan Pollinator Pathway partner, joining a community-wide effort to protect and establish essential native habitats for pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Remarkably, over 100 species of birds have been identified at Grace Farms, an increase from 40 species in 2015, as a result of restoring our native meadows.
