Rewilding is hope. It addresses climate and ecological breakdown, with people at its heart. Think big, act wild!

About us

Rewilding is hope for the future. It is the large scale restoration of nature to the point where it can take care of itself again - and take care of us. It can replenish, reconnect and revitalise nature, and has people, communities and green economies at its heart. It captures carbon, prevents flood and droughts and wildfires. It cleans air, soil and water. It improves our health and well being. Because if nature thrives, we all thrive. Rewilding Britain was established in 2015 as the first charity in Britain focused on rewilding. We want to see rewilding restoring and rejuvenating 30% of Britain by 2030. We prove that rewilding can work - by bringing together the hundreds of landowners and managers across Britain in our new Rewilding Network - large landowners, NGOs, farmers, community groups and local projects - to share experiences, research, expertise and support. We also push for policy change and funding to enable and support rewilding, and engage thousands more in campaigning, spreading the word and supporting us. Join us!

  • #RewildingWin: Big milestone for seagrass recovery in Plymouth 🌱 After five years of tireless effort, the Life Recreation ReMEDIES project, England's largest seagrass restoration project has restored eight hectares of seagrass meadows including in the Solent Maritime and Plymouth Sound Special Areas of Conservation. This partnership project, involving the Ocean Conservation Trust (a #RewildingNetwork member), has enabled local seagrass meadows in unfavourable conditions to move towards recovery – a transformative step toward reversing decades of decline.  Seagrass meadows, which absorb carbon faster than forests, are crucial for fighting climate change and supporting marine biodiversity. While this marks the end of this particular project, it’s just the beginning of long-term monitoring and continued efforts to restore and safeguard these vital underwater habitats. A massive congratulations to all involved in this pioneering #marinerewilding endeavour. 🔗 Learn more about this collaborative marine restoration project [link in comments]. • It’s the penultimate day of #12DaysOfRewilding! Thanks so much to everyone who’s been following along with our stories.  Today, we’re celebrating the incredible 44 projects that have been supported by the Rewilding Innovation Fund.  This fund has helped turn a diverse range of exciting ideas into practical action, from lynx feasibility studies to marine restoration, community engagement to drone surveying. Nine new projects received our funding earlier this year, taking the total funding to over half a million pounds since 2021. We’ll be sharing news of the latest innovative projects to be awarded the funding in January, as we open the next funding window.  Get the full story on today’s highlight in the blog (🔗 link in comments), and don’t miss out on the final day #12DaysOfRewilding tomorrow, as we wrap up 2024. 📸: Ondrej Prosicky / Shutterstock

  • It’s day 10 of #12DaysOfRewilding – and today it’s all about tauros.  Earlier this year Trees for Life announced the exciting news that tauros are being introduced to Dundreggan rewilding site, to better understand the impact of their natural herd dynamics on the landscape. Tauros have been bred to be as similar as possible to its wild ancestor the aurochs – a missing keystone species in the Highlands for generations. Rewilding Britain is proud to have supported this project with key funding to help make their bold vision a reality. We can't wait to see the positive impacts these animals have on the ecosystem. • Day nine of #12DaysOfRewilding is here! 🐾  We’ve been making great progress this year in the world of rewilding, but we know we need to do even more to facilitate the change we need to see in Britain’s land and seascapes. That’s why we’ve been growing the team, welcoming new staff on board whose expertise and passion can help us make strides. Our team has grown to 27 so far and we also welcomed four new trustees, bringing in even more influence and expertise to the organisation. • It’s day eight of #12DaysOfRewilding – today, we’re celebrating the progress made by Lifescape Project in bringing white-tailed eagles back to Cumbria.  The Cumbrian White-Tailed Eagle Project has been exploring the possibility of bringing Britain’s largest native bird of prey, the white-tailed eagle, back to the area. This year, Lifescape Project, supported by the Rewilding Innovation Fund, kicked off their feasibility study with all-important community events, moving one step closer to making this species reintroduction a reality. You can find out more about today’s highlight in our blog (🔗 link in comments), and stay tuned with #12DaysOfRewilding for more uplifting stories of restoration. 📸: Binson / Shutterstock

  • We’re over halfway! Day seven of #12DaysOfRewilding is here 🦅  This summer we revealed the impressive news that rewilding has helped jobs at sites in Scotland grow by +400%, while tackling the nature and climate emergencies. We analysed 13 major rewilding projects from the Rewilding Network, covering almost 60,000 hectares between them, revealing a massive 412% increase in jobs since rewilding began. In England and Wales, full-time equivalent jobs also increased by 93%.  Such evidence is crucial in showing that, as well as benefiting wildlife, rewilding can be a catalyst for creating new systems of living where nature and people thrive and interact. You can discover more about today’s milestone in our 2024 Rewilding Wins blog (🔗 link in comments). Keep following #12DaysOfRewilding for more rewilding highlights from this year. 📸: James Shooter

  • It’s day six of #12DaysOfRewilding – today, we’re celebrating two very sweet additions to the world of rewilding.  Over at Wilder Blean, their herd of wild bison grew to eight this year, with the birth of two new calves.  Bison were introduced to Wilder Blean in 2022 by Kent Wildlife Trust and Wildwood Trust – and were the first project to use this nature-based solution to woodland management in Britain. Since then, the herd has thrived, shaping the habitat around them, boosting biodiversity and making it more resilient to climate change.
