The Dallas Morning News has sparked conversion with architecture critic Mark Lamster's new article, "How to make Dallas architecture less boring." Lamster describes the city's underwhelming architectural culture and offers an explanation: we have no notable collegiate architecture program.    "For Dallas to significantly shift the quality of its built environment," he says, "if it wants to be more livable, equitable and economically stable, not to mention less boring — it needs to have the institutions that shape its environment within city limits."   The thought-provoking article is not all critique, as Lamster gestures to many exceptional local firms. We were proud to see that his hyperlinked example is the 2023 profile of our Design Director, Ron Stelmarski, FAIA, "How one architect is remaking Dallas in his own modern image, one skyscraper at a time." How unfortunate it is that we've knowingly or unknowingly created such a gated community as architects. People always have to think twice before they can express their feelings about the architecture around them because apparently, only exclusive architectural terminology serves as an entry token into this conversation. The general public shouldn't have to know big terms. Just like how we don't have to know specific names of trees, flowers, or birds to express our liking toward them, architecture should be the same. Just the words beautiful or ugly should do it. That's enough for us to know that something's off and go back to the drawing board and change things up. we're not building what people want. And that's because we don't talk to people, we don't ask them how they feel about the environment they live in, and we honestly don't care about the opinions of those who've been here decades more than we have. All we seem to care about mostly is our individual taste, cost-effectiveness, fast work, and convenience. All of this comes at a cost. It's costing people's joy. Now, this is not to say that architecture can solve people's problems for them. It just gives them a reason to forget about their issues once in a while. Just like taking a stroll in the park gives you a breather from your life's troubles. #architecture #architects #community #classicalarchitecture #designthinking

This competition invites to reimagine urban spaces through the lens of life’s relationality - a concept that sees all forms of life as interconnected and interdependent. By designing with nature, not just for nature, cities can become ecosystems that support various forms of life. This involves more than just conservation; it's about cohabitation. Transitioning to this new model requires a collective reimagining of what urban spaces are for, and what they could become. It challenges the still dominant economic-efficient-human-centric models of urban planning, advocating instead for a design philosophy that respects and enhances the web of life. To actualize this vision, a shift in both mindset and methodology is essential. Planners, architects, and all stakeholders in urban development must embrace a more integrative approach to design - one that prioritizes long-term ecological health and the well-being of all urban residents, human, plants and animal. COMPETITION OVERVIEW This competition is a call to break the ideological and physical barriers between the built and the natural environments. It's about imagining a city that cares, heals, and grows with all its life/forms - human and other-than-human. Also questions the old separation between life and urban context.
