Forced displacement is increasing in scale, driven by conflicts, persecution and disasters. Refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons and host communities are in need of support and opportunities. Greater international responsibility sharing and joining together humanitarian, development and peacebuilding responses are key to prevention and finding durable solutions for the displaced, the stateless, and host communities. With UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, we are combining resources, networks and humanitarian, development and peacebuilding expertise in some of the most complex displacement crises around the world. Ahead of Thursday's #WorldRefugeeDay, check out our new report, which gathers together examples of joint work and illustrates the diverse ways in which we collaborate with UNHCR to increase the benefits to forcibly displaced, stateless and host communities – from multi-country regional platforms through to country specific projects, data and analysis. Without them, we risk continuing short-sighted responses that only address immediate needs. 🌍 Supporting Refugees: The Essential Role of Refugee Tents 🏕️ In a world where millions are displaced due to conflict, natural disasters, and persecution, providing immediate and effective shelter is crucial. Refugee tents play a pivotal role in offering a safe haven and a sense of stability to those who have lost their homes. Refugee tents are more than just temporary shelters; they are lifelines that provide: Safety and Protection: These tents offer a secure space, protecting vulnerable individuals from the elements and potential threats. Internally displaced people and refugees face threats of rent hikes, evictions, and renewed displacement, compromising their safety and dignity. Access to land and housing is essential for survival and rebuilding lives. Housing, Land, and Property (HLP) rights are critical for humanitarian efforts, linking protection and recovery while addressing root causes. This brief highlights the importance of housing land and property rights in emergency and transitional contexts, with examples from Palestine-Gaza, Somalia, and Colombia, and underscores the need for consistent housing land and property rights protection throughout all displacement phases. It draws from a session by the Norwegian Refugee Council for the 2024 World Bank Land Conference. #displacement #IDP #humanitarian #humanitarianaid https://lnkd.in/dhUnGzJ2

Yesterday, on World Refugee Day, June 20, 2024, we were reminded of the urgent need to strengthen durable solutions for refugees, particularly through voluntary repatriation. To achieve this, we must address the social, economic, and political challenges in countries of origin. The refugee crisis, largely caused by civil wars and conflicts, affects many regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa. South Sudan, ravaged by conflict since 2013, is a stark example. To stem the tide, organizations, CSOs, and actors involved in refugee response must scale up rehabilitation efforts in countries of origin. By implementing development programs, projects, and activities in war-torn communities like South Sudan, we can support the remaining residents and encourage their displaced family members to return home. This will foster development and rebuild affected areas. Peacebuilding initiatives, such as conflict resolution training, community dialogues, memorial prayers, and peer support programs, are crucial in this process. Together, we can mitigate the refugee crisis and create a better future for all. #UN #UNHCR #USAID #SRH #WorldRefugeeDay #RefugeeSupport #DurableSolutions By Komakech Stephen
