How can we build a home-grown cohort of construction, engineering and healthcare workers? If it all starts with the buildings that deliver the training, further education colleges need careful design. Jo Smit looks at some practical lessons https://ow.ly/nbc450Uplxb

I recently completed my registration as an architect this year and was initially concerned about the potential repeal of the Architect’s Act by the NSW government. However, after engaging with various perspectives, it appears to be a very sensible direction. The intention behind this change is to consolidate existing legislation (including replacing 10 other acts relating to building) which will simplify and streamline the regulatory framework across the building industry. From what I understand, this change will not affect the core regulatory framework for architects. Registered architects will continue to be the only professionals permitted to use the title “architect,” and will still need to register with the Architects Registration Board. The national framework for education and competency standards will remain, ensuring that the high standards for our professional qualifications are preserved. Additionally, the ethical and professional code of conduct will remain. I am also pleased to see that the consultation period has been extended. This additional time is crucial for providing further clarity on the specific responsibilities of architects as compared to building designers. I hope the proposed changes will build public confidence in the construction sector and reinforcing the role architects play in shaping our built environment. #Architecture #Regulation #ProfessionalStandards #BuildingIndustry #Architects

The Root Cause of Low Productivity in Construction “In the mid-19th century, however, as construction became increasingly technical, the master builder was gradually replaced by three people: the architect who designs the building, the engineer who figures out how to build it safely and the ‘constructor’ who oversees the construction…and each has worked in increasing isolation from the others.” (1997, David F. Salisbury, Experimental Course Trains A New Breed of Master Builders, Stanford News Service) No one should be surprised by the fact that until Owners, Architects, Engineers, and Builders learn the importance early and ongoing collaboration, there will be no measurable improvement the rampant economic and environmental waste associated with the "construction" and "FM" sectors. www.4bt.us #collaboration #productivity #constructionindustry #sustainability #projectmanagment #efficiency

Let me through, I’m a consultant https://lnkd.in/g9zaRpwM Architects and consulting engineers are so fed up with demands to show their skills cards, that the Construction Industry Council (CIC) has had to issue a statement of clarification on the matter. Read Full Article: The Construction Index

On March 7, Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) introduced a "Sense of the Congress" resolution, House Concurrent Resolution (H.Con.Res.) 96, distinguishing the important role licensing of design professionals plays in protecting the public health, safety, and welfare in the current debate over occupational licensing reform. The design professions include but are not limited to architecture, engineering, surveying and mapping. The resolution, although non-binding, sends a signal to states that they should not affect these professions in occupational licensing reform. While the case for reform of licensing in some occupations is desirable, bills introduced in some state legislators are too broadly drafted and fail to exempt or recognize the importance of licensing of design professionals. This the introduction of this resolution sends a strong message from Congress to the states that care should be taken to preserve the necessary and legitimate licensing of architects, engineers and surveyors. This issue is one of the three policies that NSPS members will be advocating to Congress on April 23 as part of the annual NSPS Day on the Hill. Registration closes April 2, so register today! https://buff.ly/3xNPy58
