Following on from last week’s newsletter - today we launch our very own @weareportas 5-point plan for ‘Beautiful Business’. The stuff we believe will make a disproportionate impact. Not just to the economy but the way we feel, live, and shape our future. We start with the importance of Fuelling Creativity. We all know how important the creative industries are to the UK economy, with its overall contribution reaching £124.6 billion in 2022 – more than 50% larger than its contribution in 2010. And yet, the government continues to de-fund the arts – from education, to local councils and our most-loved cultural institutions - and puts far too much emphasis on maths, economics and finance. Yes we need them, but where will be without ideas and the creative force? This isn’t just about art for arts sake. The best entrepreneurs are deeply creative at their core, so let's remove this binary battle between brain and soul – let’s create the right foundations to bring them both together. Let’s move forward with ideas and creativity to fuel the economy. Because after all, really, beautiful business is a creative act.

Happy to share with you the recent review of my book "The Cooperative Economy" (Routledge, 2023) published by Gerry George at the Administrative Science Quarterly Journal. Follows is a short excerpt and a link to the full review. "The Cooperative Economy lays out a thought-provoking alternative to the capitalistic economic model. The book advocates a new economic model predicated on an ethical, community-driven exchange system that relies on collective action to promote societal values. Readers who are interested in Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom’s work on governing the commons and the design principles behind the organization of collective action will find similar themes and inspiration for how prosocial behavior and cooperation can underpin a fairer, market-based economy. The Cooperative Economy provides new areas for research for organization theorists, who can dig deeper into the organizational design innovations that are pre-conditions to fostering collaboration among market actors. Lavie raises a big “what if”—what would be different if we move from self-interest to collective interest as the guiding assumption of human behavior? The insights on how we could experiment with our platform businesses to yield social and economic outcomes are a core contribution. Happy to see this article in print! It shows how and why creating a theory of value prior to gathering data and testing hypothesis creates radical pivots that are coherent and have clarity in direction, i.e. they are purposeful! In contrast, when entrepreneurs gather data or test hypothesis without taking the time to articulate assumptions and potential cause-effect linkages, their pivots are reactive--frequent and with no clear connection to why and how it will fundamentally change the value proposition. Building on earlier work led by Arnaldo Camuffo and Alfonso Gambardella on the #scientificapproach, it unpacks the two dimensions of theorization and experimentation and shows their complementarity for pivots using mixed methods (LLM techniques and business case analysis). The Atlanta Black Chambers Government Affairs Committee is hosting a roundtable to bring together key voices to explore how set-aside legislation can level the playing field for small businesses, promote economic growth, and ensure a more equitable business environment across our state. To help provide a level playing field for small businesses, the federal government limits competition for certain contracts to small businesses. Those contracts are called “small business set-asides,” and they help small businesses compete for and win federal contracts. Some states with set-asides for small businesses include: Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Connecticut. Our goal is to develop a unified strategy to encourage Georgia legislators to enact policies that provide small businesses with greater opportunities to compete for government contracts. The Revolutionary Writings of Alexander Hamilton - OA PDF: https://lnkd.in/e5tm9Bcv Alexander Hamilton, trusted military aide and secretary to General George Washington, wrote to persuade. He had the ability to clarify the complex issues of his time without oversimplifying them. From the basic core values established in his earlier writings to the more assertive vision of government in his mature work, we see how Hamilton’s thought responded to the emerging nation and how the nation was shaped by his ideas. This comprehensive collection of his early writings, from the period before and during the Revolutionary War, provides a fuller understanding of the development of his thinking. As the writings of this volume so well reveal, Hamilton was a natural rhetorician in the best sense of that word. He wrote to persuade, not to show off, and he mastered that indispensable skill of a popular author: knowing how to clarify complicated issues without yielding to distorting simplifications. His archrival in Washington’s administration, Jefferson, paid reluctant tribute to Hamilton’s gifts when, in urging Madison to take up his pen to answer Hamilton’s newspaper essays, he called him a “mighty host.” In the earliest pieces we see the foundations of that brilliant career being set down and the contours of his core commitments established. We can also begin to see how those commitments were gradually adapted to embrace a more energetic vision of government by the time of the Continentalist essays. Understanding something of Hamilton’s early writings thus serves to illumine some of the reasons for the earliest political and constitutional controversies of the republic. Hamilton epitomized what Jefferson feared in Federalist politics. When Hamilton had the chance to draft the economic policy for the nation, he relied on what he called the “durable and permanent existence of rich and poor, debtor and creditor.” The wealthy few would develop new enterprises for the poor, whose lives would be regulated through their economic dependence and, if necessary, the master-servant provisions of the Common Law. Convinced of the need for leadership from disinterested and educated gentlemen, Hamilton rejected the notion that ordinary farmers, storekeepers, and tinkerers might just as effectively use their resources for new, unsupervised ventures as wealthy entrepreneurs would. Yet it was the pool of capital and financial stability that Hamilton created that enabled those petty entrepreneurs to prosper when Jefferson became president.
