With the Trump Administrations tenacity on show in Washington with political appointments designed to implement the promises made during the election campaign. With one eyed implementation approach and burn all bridges to the establishment. Part of this platform was to start a trade war with #China with up to 60 per cent tariffs applied to goods that the administration se fit without any real economic analysis of the effects. This leaves free trading #Asia at a crossroads as there are a number of Free Trading Agreements in the region without a customs union. the number of free trading agreements and the determination and will to keep the #ASEAN free trade may give rise to the "spaghetti bowl effect." That is a trade economics term that describes the potential for a growing number of free trade agreements (FTAs) to slow down trade relations. The term refers to the tangling of spaghetti in a bowl, which is analogous to the tangling of different FTAs in a region. The #ASEAN must look beyond free trade agreements to standardise free trade in the region and look towards custom unions, falling short on a standardised currency due to the uniqueness of the regions banking system.

Donald Trump's second presidency could usher in a period of great instability in global economic governance, writes Robert Basedow (LSE European Institute). The World Trade Organization will take an existential blow. The EU and UK should also expect higher tariffs when exporting to the US. The US is likely to take more aggressive actions to challenge the EU and its self-styled global environmental leadership. And the US is likely to push the EU to adopt more stringent policies aimed at uncoupling China from western economies. https://lnkd.in/gWnagbA8
