"Being people-led means we start with the human need, and often, a combination of technologies like AI, GenAI, AR and Immersive Commerce, is key to the solution. Our customers guide us, and with these platforms, we’re ready for whatever they need." You have to read the whole press release to get to the quote above from Walmart CTO / CDO Suresh Kumar, but it's well worth the time (and I TLDR'd it below). The takeaway is that retailers and brands still in the MVP / pilot phase in scaling these new capabilities are already falling behind as Walmart and others push forward aggressively with new capabilities. TLDR: Last week, Walmart announced a set of "common global core capabilities that are built once and deployed across Walmart U.S., Sam’s Club and Walmart International ... [enabling them] to move with speed as we bring consistent experiences to all our customers and members.” Specific capabilities include: - Wallaby, a series of "retail-specific LLMs," trained with "decades of Walmart data" and able to be combined with other LLMs, that will be used to create "highly contextual" customer experiences. - A more personalized AI-powered Customer Support Assistant that recognizes the customer from the start and "goes beyond just understanding the customer’s intent to taking actions, like finding orders and managing returns." - A GenAI-powered Content Decision Platform to create bespoke digital shopping experiences that are "as personalized as stepping into a store designed exclusively for each customer." - The Retina AR platform "to bring the Walmart shopping experience into new virtual social environments, unlock new revenue streams and be at the forefront of Adaptive Retail," and building off its work last year with Roblox and the Walmart Realm immersive social / shopping platform. The company is also "actively building dozens of additional GenAI tools for customers, members, associates and partners that leverage its GenAI platforms" #AI #GenAI #retail #innovation #AR #VR #IBM #IBMRetail https://lnkd.in/eDNUP9tB

Walmart’s unveiling of its strategy to scale AI, Generative AI (GenAI), Augmented Reality (AR), and immersive commerce experiences signals a bold step towards transforming the retail landscape. For customers, Walmart's use of AI and GenAI for hyper-personalization means more tailored shopping experiences. Tools like the personalized homepage on Walmart.com, powered by AI-based content decision platforms, will cater to individual preferences, creating a seamless and unique shopping environment. For Walmart associates, AI and AR can streamline daily tasks, from inventory management to customer support. The GenAI-powered Customer Support Assistant and other AI tools promise faster issue resolution and a smoother customer service experience Walmart’s strategy could set new benchmarks for the U.S. retail industry. The integration of adaptive retail technologies such as AI and immersive commerce will likely lead to more dynamic, customer-centric experiences, pushing other retailers to adopt similar innovations. These technologies can also enhance supply chain management and data-driven decision-making, making operations more agile. However, with AI and GenAI’s ability to collect vast amounts of customer data, maintaining privacy and ethical use of that data is crucial. As AI systems become more prominent in retail, ensuring that they are inclusive, fair, and free from biases related to race, gender, and socioeconomic factors is essential. In conclusion, Walmart’s forward-thinking strategy sets the stage for an exciting transformation in retail, benefiting customers, associates, and the industry at large. Retailers who wish to remain competitive should consider embracing these technologies but with a strong focus on ethical practices, inclusivity, and customer trust.
