🗑️Trash bins are full, but stomachs are empty. Welcome to the harsh reality of Food Waste 🍽️. A staggering 1.05 billion tonnes of food went to waste in 2022. Meanwhile, 783 million people faced hunger, and 1 in 3 experienced food insecurity. The UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2024 sheds light on this global crisis: ➡️The Scale: 132 kg of food wasted per person annually, with households responsible for 60% of the total. ➡️Climate Impact: Food waste accounts for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions—5x that of aviation! ➡️ Economic Cost: A USD 1 trillion toll on the global economy. ➡️ Global Inequality: Food waste isn’t just a “rich country” problem; disparities exist across income levels. ➡️ Solutions Needed: Stronger tracking, national policies, and public-private partnerships can reverse trends. It’s time to prioritize food waste reduction. Not just for our planet, but for humanity's future. 👉 Read the full UNEP report to learn more (Link in the comments). #FoodWaste #ZeroHunger #ClimateAction

Welcome to the World’s Third Largest Nation. Welcome to The Food Waste Nation. 🚻 Population: 1.3 billion tonnes of discarded food annually. #️⃣ Ranking: 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases, just behind China and the U.S. 🏞️ Landmarks: Piles of wasted produce, untouched meals, and the vast resources lost along the way—water, energy, and land. 🌍Exports: 8-10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Food Waste Nation thrives on neglect and inefficiency. But with collective action, we can reduce its size and impact, steering towards a more sustainable future. 🥗 Waste To Plate tackles food waste by rescuing surplus food, reducing what goes to landfills and saving resources like water and energy. It also helps fight food poverty by ensuring edible food reaches those in need and any stigma by doing that from a high end retail outlet. This promotes a circular food economy, encouraging sustainability and innovation while lowering the environmental impact of the food industry. This infographic maps out the journey of food waste across the U.S.. Most of this waste lands in landfills, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions - equivalent to the annual emissions of 42 coal power plants! Beyond environmental degradation, food waste exacerbates global hunger and squanders vital resources like water and energy. The visualization calls attention to the critical stages of food supply where waste is rampant. Addressing these can significantly move the needle towards sustainability in the U.S. food system and beyond. 💡 Stay ahead in the game of sustainability and energy with our free weekly newsletter. Let’s spend today The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) today, 29 September, accepting this global call to action. With one-third of food produced being wasted each year, food waste is responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Cutting food waste is crucial to addressing climate change and meeting UN's SDG 12.3 to halve food waste by 2030. Get involved by reducing waste at home, supporting local food rescue initiatives like ours at Waste To Plate and FareShare UK spreading awareness, and advocating for sustainable policies. Small actions lead to big change! #FoodWaste #IDAFLW #StopFoodWaste #SustainableLiving #ClimateAction #ZeroWaste #FoodSecurity #ReduceFoodWaste #SaveThePlanet #GlobalGoals

The environmental impact of #FoodWaste transcends mere heaps of unused food; it's a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, putting it on par with industrial giants like the US and China. 🌎🔥 Mismanagement, misconceptions around expiry dates, and the habit of over-purchasing amplify this #Global issue, further intensifying #ClimateChange and straining water resources. 🗑️📆🛍️ The cycle of food waste not only squanders vital resources but also impacts food security and economic stability, intensifying the urgency for systemic change. 🔄🔒💸 The imperative to address food waste is of the utmost priority, offering a dual benefit of slashing CO2 emissions and safeguarding our natural environment. 🌿♻️ Initiatives aimed at educating consumers, improving food storage and distribution methods, and promoting #Sustainable consumption patterns are vital steps forward. 📚🥦🔄 As brought to light by authoritative sources in the #Sustainability and #ESG realm such as the FAO (UN), NRDC, Business Waste, and Earth.org. 🌍💡💧

This Sunday will mark the 5th annual International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste 🍽 This day serves as an important reminder of why do the work we do here at Littlefoot Ventures! Food waste is a critical issue that needs urgent action. Why? Because food waste has a tremendous impact on our planet, our economy, and our people👇 🥕 1/3 of all food is lost or wasted between farm and fork. 🌎 8-10% of global GHG emissions come from food waste. 💰 Food loss costs the global economy $1 trillion USD every year. 👥 Just 1/4 of wasted food could feed 795 million people who go hungry daily. Together, we can make a difference by reducing waste and supporting sustainable solutions. How will you be spreading awareness? #IDAFLW2024 #NoFoodWaste #ClimateAction Eva Goulbourne #ZeroHunger

#food #waste #global #hunger #climate #change Globally there is enough food to feed everyone on the planet. However we continue to see nearly 10% of the global population goes to bed hungry. Some reasons for this include poverty, conflict, and the climate crisis. Additionally, one-third of the food that is produced is wasted, which is enough to feed almost twice the number of people who are Food waste has a negative impact on the global economy, climate change, nature loss, and pollution. It costs the global economy an estimated $1 trillion, and generates up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. When food waste sits in landfills, it creates methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. If food waste were a country, it would rank third in the world for greenhouse gas emissions, behind only China and the US. 60 per cent of waste happens. at the household level, with food services responsible for 28 per cent and retail 12 per cent. “UN” https://lnkd.in/eGM6_adZ As of 2022, only 21 countries have included food loss and/or waste reduction in their national climate plans (NDCs). The 2025 NDCs revision process provides a key opportunity to raise climate ambition by integrating food loss and waste. The Food Waste Index Report underscores the urgency of addressing food waste at both individual and systemic levels. Only four G20 countries (Australia, Japan, UK, the USA) and the European Union have food waste estimates suitable for tracking progress to 2030. Canada and Saudi Arabia have suitable household estimates, with Brazil’s estimate expected late 2024

What is Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3? SDG 12.3: Cut global food waste per person in half at the retail and consumer levels, and reduce food losses throughout production and supply chains, including after harvest. Food waste is a huge global issue, causing environmental damage, financial loss, and hunger. Why is it important? 1. Environmental Impact: Wasted food often goes to landfills, where it releases methane, a strong greenhouse gas. 2. Economic Loss: Billions of dollars are lost every year due to food waste. 3. Social Impact: While food is being wasted, millions of people still don't have enough to eat. What can we do? For individuals: — Plan your meals and shop smart. — Store food correctly. — Use food scraps for composting. For businesses: — Manage supply chains well. — Give away extra food. — Cut down on food waste in your operations. For governments: — Make rules to lower food waste. — Spend on better food storage and transport systems. Let's join forces to cut food waste and create a better, more sustainable world. #SDG12 #FoodWaste #Sustainability #ClimateAction #ZeroHunger
