We’re so excited to welcome three incredible new members to the River Network board! This week, meet Paulina Lopez (she/her), Executive Director of the Duwamish River Community Coalition (DRCC). The DRCC elevates the voices of those impacted by the Duwamish River pollution and other environmental injustices for a clean, healthy, equitable environment for people and wildlife. They promote place-keeping and prioritize community capacity and resilience. Listen to Paulina share why she’s excited to join our board! And visit our page for introductions from Hema Prado and Nicole Lampe, our other two wonderful new board members 🌟 (Saltar a 0:55 para español / skip to 0:55 for Spanish!) #CleanWater #HealthyRivers ID: A video of Paulina facing the camera and speaking. On this Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor Florida’s Indigenous communities and their deep connection to our state’s waterways and ecosystems. Florida's state parks, like Jonathan Dickinson, which are caregivers to Florida’s first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Loxahatchee, are not just recreational spaces—they’re vital for preserving cultural and natural resources. As we reflect on Indigenous wisdom, let’s commit to protecting these precious resources: 1)Practice Responsible Recreation: Respect water sources and habitats when visiting parks. 2)Join Clean-Up Efforts: Participate in volunteer days to help maintain our waterways. 3)Support Indigenous Stewardship: Engage with Indigenous-led conservation initiatives. 4)Educate Others: Spread awareness about the importance of water conservation. Let’s honor Indigenous Peoples Day by safeguarding Florida’s natural beauty for generations! 💧🌴 #IndigenousPeoplesDay #WaterConservation #FloridaStateParks #Sustainability #CulturalHeritage

The Clean River Advisory Council created an 8-part vision for the future of the Mississippi River. The final priority outlined in the document regards funding for green initiatives and nature-based solutions. We envision a policy enviornment where available federal funding is leveraged by local governments to promote river equity and green practices. In partnership with the Walton Family Foundation and the Quad Cities Community Foundation, the C-RAC is able to directly contribute to a well-funded conservation enviornment through our grants subcommittee. For centuries, many Indigenous communities have been forced to live a story based on a colonial legacy, a story that forces them to extract their natural resources as the only way to receive a monthly income. We are a nonprofit organization in Ecuador who believes there is a powerful way to change this reality. We can fix our environmental problems if we start telling and believing in a different story. The story needs a new rhythm and begins with us humans learning to act like a synchronized ensemble of drummers. Local community-based restorers are the drummers who are on the frontlines of environmental conservation. The key criterion for Woodland Trust support - "500+ trees are planted on at least half a hectare" - seems odd in this age of natural regeneration. That's way too high a density and bypasses the incredibly biodiverse flower-rich grassland-shrubland mosaic phase that we all know so many species of conservation concern need. Planting wall-to-wall whips does NOT foster natural woodland development. Assisted natural regeneration does where small groups of native trees and shrubs are planted, leaving plenty of open ground in the early years.
Landowners Phil Johncock and Chelsea Wills applied for The Woodland Trust MOREwoods scheme, allowing the pair to plant an area of mixed coppice on their land in North Devon 🌳 Watch their interview with Farmers Guide editor, Rachel Hicks, and read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eBn-2iYe #environment #biodiversity #treeplanting #community #woodland

🌱 New Shoot Room Sessions Episode Alert! 🌱 Excited to share the latest Shoot Room Sessions episode featuring Grant Moir, Chief Executive of the Cairngorms National Park Authority! We filmed with Grant last week at the beautiful Dorback Estate, discussing the balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. Grant shared insights into the park's ambitious goals: 38,000 hectares of peatland restoration and 35,000 hectares of woodland expansion by 2045. We also touched on deer management, affordable housing, and how carbon credits can fund restoration — all while emphasising the importance of community engagement and transparency. Another huge thanks to Grant and the Cairngorms National Park Authority team, we look forward to future collaborations to further enhance and restore this extraordinary landscape. Key to re opening shellfish harvesting is identifying and mitigating sources of human waste: leaking septic tanks, broken wastewater pipes, and improper connections. We have work to do.
In early July, the BC Government committed to work with Pauquachin First Nation to clean up pollution of Coles Bay shellfish beds and re-open the traditional harvest -- as a pilot project for a new coast-wide Healthy Shellfish Initiative. This is a remarkable win for the Pauquachin Nation, Chief Rebecca David, and Octavio Cruz -- as well as an ELC team that assisted Pauquachin. The three comprehensive ELC reports we produced for this campaign are found here: https://lnkd.in/g4_GeUKa Globe and Sun articles about the work we did on this campaign are found here: https://lnkd.in/gyYJT_q4 https://lnkd.in/gZtQWxVC The new Provincial Coastal Marine Strategy that commits to the Healthy Shellfish Initiative is found here: https://lnkd.in/gjZy-uif Rebecca David: Restoring shellfish along B.C.'s coast would restore a way of lifevancouversun.com
