NHS Research Scotland is celebrating the 76th birthday of our health service on Friday 5 July by encouraging more people of all backgrounds to get involved in vital research. Since its inception in 1948, NHS has consistently pushed the boundaries of the possible through the evolution of treatments, diagnostics, and prevention methods that have helped to achieve better patient outcomes. Research remains a driving force behind that evolution. High-quality research is an essential part of an effective, modern NHS. This Friday is therefore an opportunity to celebrate Scotland’s diverse clinical research landscape, raise clinical trial awareness, and champion our researchers’ unwavering commitment to driving better care. On this anniversary, we have the chance to express just how proud we are of our forward-thinking research community here in Scotland. It is vital that we continue to drive the research and innovation agenda by harnessing our country’s vast knowledge and experience in order to deliver the most progressive healthcare possible. However, research cannot be achieved in isolation. At its heart, it is also a partnership with successful studies only being possible thanks to the vital contribution of members of the public working closely with researchers and healthcare professionals. Every member of this diverse group has a key role to play, from patients, carers, and family to potential future patients, and those who use health and social care services. Getting involved in research – whether that is helping to shape the direction of a research project or directly taking part – that contribution is ultimately helping us to save lives. We know demand for healthcare continues to rise and the system is under pressure, but by working together, driving meaningful conversations, and encouraging diversity of views and experiences we can improve the quality and relevance of the research we conduct, and ultimately deliver better care for people across Scotland. Hopefully this important work by Georgia Richards with King's Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine will be taken into account by the Government as it considers its response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry recommendations. Whilst Recommendation 113.40 was prompted by the lack of attention given to the comments of the Coroner about the Lakanal House fire, (the fire was in 2009 and the Inquest in 2013) the implications for the annual 500+ coroner Prevention of Future Death reports that go largely unnoticed are considerable. Recommendation 113.40 states: “Our investigations have revealed that some important recommendations affecting fire safety were ignored by the government in the years leading up to the Grenfell Tower fire. Recommendations made by the Select Committee in 1999 were not implemented and the department’s response to the recommendations made by the Lakanal House coroner was inadequate. The department had no system for recording recommendations made by public bodies or keeping track of its response to them. That was obviously unsatisfactory. We recommend that it be made a legal requirement for the government to maintain a publicly accessible record of recommendations made by select committees, coroners and public inquiries together with a description of the steps taken in response. If the government decides not to accept a recommendation, it should record its reasons for doing so. Scrutiny of its actions should be a matter for Parliament, to which it should be required to report annually.” Incidentally, the recent furore about the lack of progress following the Public Inquiry into child sexual abuse, might have been avoided if 113.40 had already been implemented! Well done Georgia Richards!
Dr Georgia Richards, an Epidemiologist, Health Research Scientist, and King’s Prize Research Fellow, recently attended the launch of the 2024 National State of Patient Safety Report at the House of Lords. Dr Richards leads the Preventable Deaths Tracker (PDT), a data-driven vigilance and learning tool hosted at King’s College London. This tool ensures that information from Coroners’ reports is accessible, enabling real-time analytics and impactful research. Her work was featured in the report produced by the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London and commissioned by charity Patient Safety Watch, which highlights concerns surrounding the decline in patient safety across England over the past two years. Dr Richards’ Preventable Deaths Tracker highlights a critical issue in Coroners’ Prevention of Future Deaths (PFD) reports. These reports provide essential insights and recommendations for the NHS and other services but often fail to prompt the required actions. Data from the PDT shows that only half of PFDs receive a published response, despite this being a legal obligation. ➡️ Read the full review into changes in patient safety here: https://lnkd.in/g5Vsc3K8
