This morning, the American Historical Association is briefing congressional staff on Capitol Hill about the research in American Lesson Plan, our landmark study of the teaching of US history in secondary schools across the country. From Nick Kryczka: “The US education system… has as many curricular decision points as there are school districts and classrooms. Still, history teachers share common ground in terms of the principles they hold, the goals they pursue, and the resources they trust.” Brenda Santos: “Where history instruction is excellent, it is because of teachers…. The report’s most urgent implication is its finding and corresponding call to remedy the under-resourcing of high school history teachers.” Jonathan Zimmerman: Teachers do not “typically engage in vapid triumphalism (as left-wing critics fear) or in incessant negativity (as right wingers assert). The culture war over history is real, but it has also been radically exaggerated by observers like me. I stand corrected.” For the full report: https://lnkd.in/eNsWPWVF

Thoughtful Patriotism For as man is the best of the animals when perfected, so he is the worst of all when sundered from law and justice.—Aristotle, Politics, Book I (around 350 BC) The Hillsdale K-12 civics program begins with a strong foundation in American history, geography, and the founding documents of the United States and eventually concludes with a deep examination of the moral, political, and philosophical underpinnings of the American Founding in grades 10-12. Through this program, we seek to foster a deep understanding of how our system of government came to be and how it operates. This knowledge contributes to an appreciation for the American experiment with self-government and a sense of responsibility for the role citizens ought to play in the civic life of the nation. We refer to the ability to meaningfully contemplate these matters as “thoughtful patriotism.”

Participated in this thought-provoking session hosted by the Institute for Humane Studies, focusing on the complexities of local self-governance in today's landscape. Discussions revolved around topics including the challenges posed by centralized funding for community organizations; the impact of urban influence on local dynamics, the significance of genuine ownership and decision-making in participation; the global trend of seeking meaning through tradition; the importance of grassroots empowerment for building trust and compromise; and significance of the interconnectedness of institutions and cultures in shaping local self-governance frameworks. #LocalGovernance #CommunityEmpowerment #DecisionMaking #InstitutionalCulture

📚 Jackob's Top Read: "The Federalist Papers" by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay 📚 Why It Matters: "The Federalist Papers" is a foundational collection of essays that offers deep insights into the principles and reasoning behind the United States Constitution. Written by three of the Founding Fathers, this work explores key themes such as the separation of powers, checks and balances, and federalism. It’s essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the philosophical and practical underpinnings of a democratic government. A new round of multi-year investments will support democracy-related research and education at the University of Notre Dame, while also funding 12 convenings for scholars and thought leaders. These journeys will produce new knowledge about civic engagement, human rights, influential rhetoric, and much more. As Notre Dame experts continue to establish themselves as leaders in this space, research inquiries will take varied forms — from assessing the role of stakeholders in shaping Chile's Constitutional Referendums to examining music's function during Philippine martial law. These cutting-edge projects are made possible through the University's inaugural Democracy Catalyst Fund, intended to support work that closely aligns with the Democracy Initiative — a key pillar of the strategic framework. As global uprisings for racial justice put questions about historical and ongoing racial injustice higher on academic, public and political agendas, TJ scholars increasingly started to explore which dynamics of racial injustice might be supported by, or reflected in, the practice of TJ. In this conversational piece with Joyce Hope Scott and Tine Destrooper we explore what the implications are of the mobilisation of TJ rhetoric and tools by racial justice activists in the U.S., both for the specific struggle for reparative justice, as well as for the broader domain of TJ. This paper is published as part of a special issue on Reimagining Transitional Justice for a Less Violent, more Inclusive World edited by Caitlin Biddolph and Caitlin Mollica. https://lnkd.in/erccQUNZ
