If they end up in your recycling bin, there is a chance they could get damaged in the recycling process, by coming into contact with all sorts of contamination or even damage the recycling facility itself. We’d recommend selling them or donating them to a charity shop or clothing bank. 👖

What's the process for recycling mattresses and furniture? ♻️ Once your items arrive to one of our processing centers, everything is sorted, and we look for reusable items or items to donate. Donating items is the first step, since this achieves a 100% recycling rate. Our ground crew will then separate things by hand, and items will be shredded or baled depending on material. Mattresses and box springs are cut apart in order to collect all the raw materials, such as metal, wood, cotton, felt, polyurethane and fabric. A sustainable initiative I had at work made it into the local paper... We identified an opportunity that would help us towards our sustainability targets whilst also helping schools/charities in the community. It was observed that a substantial amount of carton protection divider sheets were being discarded into blue recycling bags (the divider cards are required to ensure the cartons are protected whilst in the box), amounting to approximately 4 bags of recycling per order, weighing around 60kg per month. This is just on one line. The divider sheets are A3 in size and are very good quality and can be reused in many different ways, particularly in learning environments. Recognising the potential for improvement, we embarked on a collaborative initiative with local schools and charities in the area. Our initiative was met with enthusiasm by everyone we met during our trips. On our travels we visited: Tytherington High School, Marlborough Primary School, Bollinbrook Primary School, Fermaine Academy and Space 4 Autism. They were all very grateful for the high quality card and have eagerly agreed to support our site's waste reduction targets by reusing these sheets in various creative ways within their educational environments. This collaborative effort marks a significant milestone in our journey towards achieving our waste reduction objectives. The success of this trial initiative, showcases the impact of proactive engagement and innovative thinking working together with operations and procurement. When it comes to all the STUFF we own, some of us are happy to share. When we nobly head to the local charity shop or recycling centre and offload it when its no longer of use to us. But is that sharing? 🤔 Sharing isn't just about giving away, it's a two way street, the pleasure to use something in common with another. Did you know we rescue fabrics that are landfill bound? We use the fabrics in our sewing classes to make your project? We want to avoid our participants buying new fabrics, so we offer our fabrics for free in our sewing classes. What more, if the participants wanted to buy more, they can by contributing to our charitable fund. 💷 Why? Because we are a circular business. What's that? In simple terms it means keeping a resource (in our case its fabrics, sewing tools and machines) in use for longer. This means making sure we don't generate further fabric waste, reduce buying by sharing and showing our participants sustainable sewing techniques. We are always looking for new ways of doing things and reducing our eco footprint.
