Earlier this year, I made it a goal to host an event for founders in NYC. The premise was simple. Show up and put your phone in a sealable pouch (Comedy Cellar vibes), play some pool & board games, eat some pizza, and enjoy the company of the dope people around you. On Tuesday, this came to fruition -- I hosted the first 'Unplugged Event' for 30+ founders, VCs, and creators. A few learnings... 1) Most people don’t truly realize how much time we spend on our devices. At the start of the event, people had an opportunity (shoutout Opal) to see how much of their lives they spend on their phones. The shock value was real. 2) People are craving IRL connection. Removing them from their devices is a forcing function for that, but the underlying issue is that people are loneliner than ever. 3) If someone spends 2 hours less on their phone per day than their baseline but doesn't use that time effectively, it's worthless. Always set an intention for your time. Relationship building is at the top of the list. 4) The event was fairly small compared to other tech events in NYC. Turns out this was a feature, not a bug. People gave great feedback that sometimes the bigger events feel like speed dating. Here, the tight-knit group made it a lot easier to go deeper with the people around you. 5) Rummikub is still a fan favorite and I will give anyone the work. In other attendees' words... "It felt freeing to be disconnected for an extended period of time and to be present in the moment." "In a world that becomes increasingly digitized, it is so refreshing to find a group of people willing to disconnect and interact face to face." "I was stressed from a long day of work and felt better after the event as I was able to distract myself with conversation and playing games with others."

"Neil, how do you come up with the ideas for your digital platforms and how do you make it?" This is a great question and one I've been meaning to post the answer to for a long time. Since 2012 I have been working with my business partner on my apps company, Steve. He's not only a great guy, but a genius coder too. We talk everyday and have done for 12 years. We just get each other - even though we are very different people. Well..apart from...we are both on a mission to create something unique, useful and better than the competition. It's our passion and belief that nothing is beyond us and we will reach our goal one day. My specific job is to identify opportunities and come up with ideas, then develop those ideas into a full flow platforms - highlighting the potential pitfalls and features. I also create the names of the apps, bring together the branding and the UI. Steve then takes this from me and starts the coding process. This has become a lot smoother over the years as we have an awesome framework with CrowdApps - which has, and continues to, bring a cohesive look and feel to all of our platforms new and old. I then work with Steve to test everything - going through every single process to sniff out errors and bugs - this can take weeks. Together we patch these and polish the product - and think about how to improve it. We often don't agree - and that's healthy. Why should I or Steve know 100% what is right? We compromise and develop new branches of thought which spawn even better ideas. This relationship is rare and is one I cherish. Just look at what we've created together over 12 years... As I reflect on 2024, I’m filled with immense gratitude and pride for what we’ve accomplished at Hopae. This year has been one of incredible growth, hard work, and milestones that reaffirm our mission to make digital identity seamless, secure, and more joyful experience for everyone. - Industry Recognition: We were recognized as a Representative Vendor in Gartner’s Market Guide for Decentralized Identity—a validation of our efforts to drive trust and credibility within the identity space. - Community Impact: Our open-source library SD-JWT-JS hit an incredible milestone with 2.1M downloads, empowering the wallet dev community worldwide. It also became the first stage-promotion case in OpenWallet Foundation. - Funding Milestone: We secured $6.5M in seed funding, which gives us the resources to expand our vision and innovate further. - Business Partnerships: Made 10+ partnerships with industry-leading companies for digital transformation through digital wallet. Among them, Esports definitely proved the potential to scale in revenue next year. - Team Growth: And perhaps most exciting for me personally, we welcomed 8 new team members—people whose talent and energy inspire me every day.
