CHANGE IS A CONSTANT IN LIFE At rocket50.io, we are focused on specific offers to empower people over 50 to create a career with meaning and joy – from 1:1 highly personalized coaching to self-guided upskilling programs. Change is a constant of life. And with ageing comes change in the way you assess, build or maintain your career. Here are our top 5 to lean into this change: 1. Focus On Your Strengths Emphasize your years of experience, valuable skills, and notable accomplishments to demonstrate your value as an employee. By highlighting what you bring to the table, you can challenge ageist stereotypes and show that you are still a valuable asset to any organization. 2. Get tech interested In today’s rapidly evolving world, it’s crucial to stay current with new technologies, industry trends, and best practices in your field. Continuously learning and adapting will not only keep you competitive but also showcase your willingness to embrace change and contribute to the growth of your organization. 3. Network Strategically Building a strong professional network is essential for older workers. Attend industry events, join relevant associations or groups, and leverage online platforms to connect with colleagues, mentors, and potential employers. Networking can provide you with valuable insights, job opportunities, and support from like-minded professionals. 4. Be Assertive Advocate for yourself in the workplace by speaking up and making your contributions known. If you feel that your ideas or work are being overlooked or undervalued, assertively communicate your perspective and demonstrate the value you bring to the team. Don’t be afraid to request opportunities for professional development or advancement that align with your career goals. 5. Emphasize Your Soft Skills Older workers often possess a wealth of soft skills, such as effective communication, leadership abilities, and problem-solving expertise. Highlight these skills on your resume during interviews to showcase the unique value you bring to the workplace. Employers increasingly recognize the importance of these skills and their positive impact on team dynamics. And, last but not least: speak up or address agism if you experience it. I often hear from our members that when they reach their decade of 50, they feel that their priorities have shifted - a subtle change where they notice they are no longer motivated by the things they used to feel excitement for or experience a longing for something that they can’t quite put their finger on. While this experience is unsettling, it can also be a good opportunity to take the time to examine your life and see if you are doing the things that matter to your current self versus the younger you that made choices back then for different reasons. This is particularly important when you are looking for a new job. Many older job seekers report on the difficulties they have experienced looking for a new job. While there is no doubt that ageism exists, sometimes it is the case that the job seeker doesn't realize that they are unconsciously transmitting their uncertainty or dissatisfaction in interviews so they lack the passion and enthusiasm that hiring managers are looking for. If you have lost your job or are thinking about looking for a new one, take the time to understand what you are motivated by today. As the dust settles on 2024, I won't be the only person thinking: "What happened there?!" I can always tell that there's been a lot going on when I blink 👀 in January and suddenly it's the 23rd December and I've not wrapped any Christmas presents yet! Sorry to anyone who gets their gift in a brown paper bag this year... I hate the whole year in review format so I'm not going to humble brag about the things I've done, but I would like to share the things I've learnt or reinforced in my own mind along the way: 👥️ - Great People Trump Everything - 👥️ As difficult as this year has been, the one constant has been being surrounded by great people who look out for each other. That is something long lasting and it matters more than any fleeting ups and downs. 🤖 - The AI Bots Are Rising - 🤖 But... AI isn't coming for your job (at least not quite yet). This year might have been the biggest leap forwards I've seen in terms of tech in my career with the inexorable rise of AI enabled tech. It still feels like there are a few leaps to go before there are some monumental breakthroughs in its application across every business but, with the focus there and the tech becoming increasingly affordable to all, the time to that day arriving seems to get shorter and shorter until AI properly takes centre stage. Watch this space with next year's hot topic: Agentic AI. 💡 - Innovators Will Be Winners - 💡 The UK (and global) economy is changing at a rapid pace. The ways of working and business models of old won't cut it any more. Organisations are facing existential crises where they either read the room and adapt to go for after something new, or risk obscurity. This seems to be industry agnostic and widespread. It emphasises the need for agile businesses that can change direction when faced with a challenge, a relatively rare trait up until now. 💼 - Recruiters Gonna Recruit - 💼 I wanted to end this with a lighthearted poke at the fact that no matter if the market is "awful" or "the hottest I've ever seen it right now OMG GUYS!" you can guarantee that your LinkedIn feed will still be full of posts from recruiters telling you about their massive candidate pool, or how many roles they've got on offer, or some outlandish story of something a candidate said at interview. So remember if you're in a tough position looking for a job, someone will always be there to help you. At least there are some constants eh? (P.S. recruiters, I love you all ❤️, never change...) ❤️❤️ Big love to my network at the end of 2024 whether its been a good or a bad year. ❤️❤️ Let's see what 2025 brings after a nice bit of time off for some mince pies (how is there still no mince pie emoji?!), sherry and relaxation. 🥧🍷😌🎄

While a tumultuous 2024 may be drawing to a close, the tech industry will continue to experience dramatic shifts in the year ahead, creating a spectrum of new careers that necessitate new skills and expertise, according to the IT Skills and Certifications Pay Index from Foote Partners LLC. The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has caused traditional roles to evolve at a rapid pace while rendering many legacy tech skills obsolete, explained chief analyst and research officer David Foote. Specifically, successfully applying AI to an existing role or technology requires holistic and soft skills such as communication, collaboration, analytical thinking and innovation. Foote’s firm is also seeing return-to-office policies and the rise of self-managing teams, which will fundamentally alter the way work gets done and require different skills and abilities. To help you plot your next career move by staying ahead of trends, here’s a look at the roles and skills that gained (and lost) value during 2024 and are positioned to continue down the same path in 2025. #artificialintelligence #techjobs #techindustry

Interesting, and very concerning if accurate, forecast from IDC regarding tech skills. A pair of excerpts from the article are below: "IDC predicts that by 2026, more than 90% of organizations worldwide will feel the pain of the IT skills crisis, amounting to some $5.5 trillion in losses caused by product delays, impaired competitiveness, and loss of business." "While it’s no surprise that artificial intelligence (AI) skills are currently the most in-demand skill for most enterprises, IT Operations are a close second. Additionally, a variety of cloud skills, including architecture, data management and storage, and software development, are among the ten most needed skills identified by survey respondents."
Within two years, 90% of organizations will suffer a critical tech skills shortage

Every client of mine is refreshing their #AI ambition, strategy, and MLops driven largely by GenAI. My esteemed colleague David speaks to 10 points of consideration when evaluating the use of open-source GenAI in your organization.
While open-source GenAI offers promising opportunities, there are critical considerations for business leaders to navigate when deciding between leveraging open-source models and commercial LLMs. I recently spoke with @Maria Korolov for @CIO Online about opportunities and potential issues. I have been following this survey on Trigger Strategy Group Substack (https://lnkd.in/gMBKPsMi) where we can all commiserate about the current state of tech. Because, honestly, what’s a few existential crises among anonymous friends? I’m excited about how the community is sharing stories about the joys and frustrations of living in a world where AI-powered chatbots are slowly taking over our lives. It’s been eye-opening to see the number of negative and very negative stories from members. What is interesting about the survey techniques is that the self-assessment of the story allows you to peek inside why people feel the way they do. As someone who’s passionate about complexity practices (aka trying to make sense of this chaos), I’m excited to see people sharing their perspectives and experiences. It’s through these diverse views that we can gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies at play in our tech landscape. So, if you’re ready to join the ranks of fellow tech refugees and share your own war stories, I encourage you to check out the survey.
