As we navigate an era marked by the challenges of misinformation and disinformation, often amplified by advanced technologies, the value of trustworthy journalism has never been more important. This day, declared by the United Nations and celebrated every May 3rd, not only commemorates the Windhoek Declaration's commitment to press freedom but also reminds us of the need for transparency and the protection of journalists worldwide. The freedom to report the truth is a pillar of democracy, serving as an immunity against injustice and corruption. Let us advocate for and support a free, independent, and unbiased press. On #WorldPressFreedomDay we call on the global community to take more than just a moment to recognize the hundreds of journalists and members of the press who have been killed in global conflicts—we call for action to be taken. Last year nearly 100 journalists were killed, close to 75% of which were killed in #Gaza, and close to 400 imprisoned globally. These numbers have nearly doubled compared to the past three years, and make the last three months of 2023 the deadliest quarter for press in conflicts zones since 2007 according to UNESCO. The consequences of silencing the press and journalists around the world cannot be understated. We must come together as development professionals, peacebuilders, humanitarian workers, and as a global community to: --->preserve freedom of the press in every community regardless of ongoing conflicts --->prevent and stop the spread of misinformation --->support local and regional media to have their voices and stories heard on the international stage. On this World Press #Freedom Day 2024, let's champion true freedom for the press! The theme 'A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,' emphasises the critical role journalists play in safeguarding our environment. But #true press freedom extends beyond reporting; it's about enabling journalists to speak truth to power, without fear of censorship or persecution. As #WACSI, we stand firm in advocating for unfettered press freedom, empowering journalists to hold authorities accountable and defend democratic principles. Let's uphold and protect the cornerstone of democracy - a truly #free and #independent press! #PressFreedom #TruePressFreedom #WorldPressFreedomDay
