What motivates customers to visit convenience stores? How can C-Store leaders drive more in-store visits? Data from Intouch Insight's 2024 Convenience Store Trends Report shows that food, and the value offered in made-to-order menu options, is leading the way to landing more loyal customers. The report notes over 90% of consumers report trying made-to-order food from a convenience store, compared to about 75% in 2022. As a result, in-store sales from foodservices are soaring, with prepared food posting more than a 12% gain in sales and nearly 14% gross profit year over year. That averages out to more than $50,000 per store every month when someone paying at the pump decides to come in for something to eat. For a national chain of 500 stores, $25 million in non-fuel sales makes the convenience store an unmissable arena for customer-centric innovation. I've just returned from a whirlwind week at Groceryshop in Las Vegas where I had some great conversations with retail operators and technology providers on the current challenges facing grocery retail. The AI hype cycle is in full gear, but a theme that stood out in my conversations is that very few people seem to be thinking about this in an exponential way. I must have overheard the term "we're using GenAI" about 100 times, and almost every single one was about marketing content/asset creation or a chat bot. There will be massive value created by this technology, but those use cases are too niche to move the needle. In terms of generating step-change business value, the technology is not quite ready for prime time (but based on the pace of improvement, it will be soon). Meanwhile, numerous technology vendors are offering solutions that are running barely-modern ML to solve classical problems. I think that many of these solutions will be commoditized in the next few years and those tech vendors will lose a raison d'etre. That isn't to say there aren't vendors offering really differentiated solutions. 345 Global has the potential to be massively disruptive. Placer.ai gets better every time I see it. And Afresh's recently-announced DC replenishment offering is a step change improvement in their capabilities. I was also impressed with some of the personalization offerings, but none stood out as a true game changer (yet). Overall, it was an inspiring (if exhausting) week, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the industry evolves as these technologies mature.
