The success of school choice in Australia is widely known as the growth in non-government school enrolments has eclipsed that of government schools over the past 10 years, largely thanks to sector-blind federal Government funding. Public school lobbyists negate the choice argument by claiming that school choice doesn't have an impact on student outcomes, so why fund anything other than public schools. The research shows that the opposite is true and this 5 min video highlights the Los Angeles unified school district's Zones of Choice initiative which has helped close the performance gap between students by encouraging poor-performing schools to improve. This is what we are now seeing in Australia as state governments are reinvesting in public education through teacher workforce salary increases and facilities upgrades as they try to stem the outflow of students to non-government schools. This is because, like the technology which now defines education delivery, what we define as 'outcomes' has evolved and parents today want a complex array of academic, social and wellbeing outcomes for their children. Never before has school choice had such a fundamental impact on a parent's desire to ensure their child is properly set up to enter the adult world.
