I have been lecturing a course on #Social #Epidemiology in the Erasmus MC summer programme of the Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences (NIHES) Erasmus Summer Programme for many years. We described patterns of #health #inequalities and discussed the explanations of these inequalities, important topics! The week however, always ended with the message that our knowledge about how to tackle inequalities was scarce. It felt a bit frustrating to equip new generations of students with the tools and methods to do research on themes about which we know much already, and less with the methods to obtain knowledge about what we don’t know. And that while such methods improved over time, and can be of great help for many public health challenges, such as curbing the increase in #overweight and #obesity and the rising costs in care. With great help from Fleur ter Ellen, we developed a new course on ‘the evaluation of public health interventions’ (https://lnkd.in/eQ7rFM4p), with a focus on universal and selective #prevention, which was given last week. We introduced our students with the need to truly understand the complex #systems in which #public #health interventions are implemented, the construction of causal loop diagrams, the ways of identifying leverage points in these systems. Moreover, we introduced quantitative and qualitative methods to answer questions about the impact of interventions and policies and the processes related to that in those systems. Students were challenged to identify what we don’t know, and to avoid thinking that we always need a randomized control trial for answers. We used, for example, the situation where a young couple rents a house very close to a highway. Building rental apartments so close to the highway almost guarantees heath inequalities in the next decades; offering a physical activity program for example won’t solve that problem. Truly understanding the housing system is needed to come up with better solutions and requires different insights from pulic health experts. Giving this course could not be done without the contribution of experts. I was extremely happy to have professor Frank de Vocht from University of Bristol, who presented numerous great examples of evaluations of public health interventions. We had an inspiring Q&A session with dr. James Nobles from Leeds Beckett University on Ripple Effects Mapping, and Fleur ter Ellen developed a causal loop diagrams with the students. For me, it gave more energy than wrapping up on Friday with the conclusion that we don’t know much about how to solve our challenges. I hope that at least some young researchers got inspired to contribute to this. It is not easy, given the inherent combination of mixed methods that is required, but we were lucky to have a great group of students. Given the improvements, we will surely have to update the course again next year. I am looking forward doing so.

Professor Ichiro Kawachi, a renowned social epidemiologist from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, visited my hometown! He came all the way from the U.S. to deliver a lecture as he was impressed by the Evidence-Based Policy Making (EBPM) initiatives on "Children's Health and Social Inequalities," which are being implemented by Adachi city in Tokyo in collaboration with Professor Fujiwara's team from Institute of Science Tokyo. Surprisingly, the event took place just a 3-minute walk from my home! Professor Kawachi’s presentation highlighted the critical role of early learning experiences that foster self-control and self-esteem, addressing economic disparities, and promoting social capital—such as social participation and trust in society—as key factors in improving children's health. I found the latest findings from the Adachi research incredibly insightful. One fascinating concept discussed was "family social capital," which revolves around whether a family provides a sense of security. This concept links directly to parents' working conditions, workplace stress, and interpersonal relationships. It was inspiring to learn how improving children's health involves efforts at multiple levels—individuals, companies, and society as a whole. As a resident, I also gained a deeper understanding of Adachi City's comprehensive approach to childcare, health, and education policies. It was both educational and inspiring! #harvard #socialepidemiology #epidemiology #ebpm

🎓 Reflecting on my MSc journey 🌟 As I step into my final term at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London in MSc Control of Infectious Diseases , I can't help but reminisce about the day I received that life-changing letter of offer from my dream university. It feels like yesterday when I was grappling with rejection letters, unsure career paths, and battling imposter syndrome. But here I am, 8 months into this incredible journey, profoundly grateful for every twist and turn that led me to make the decision to move thousands of miles away from home. The lessons learned, the growth experienced, and the friendships forged have been nothing short of transformative. Being surrounded by some of the finest minds in public health research and academia has been awe-inspiring. Each day, learning alongside peers from diverse corners of the globe, I'm reminded of the power of collective knowledge and shared experiences. As I look forward to my next challenge, I am excited to embark on my biggest research project yet: exploring the burden of pediatric schistosomiasis in Senegal through the use of spatial techniques, to help inform implementation of the new formulation of pediatric praziquantel. It's an ambitious endeavor, but one I am eager to undertake collaborating with my incredible supervisors. Here's to embracing every opportunity, overcoming every challenge, and continuing to grow as both an individual and a scholar. The journey thus far has been extraordinary, and I can't wait to see where it takes me next. #PublicHealth #MScJourney #LSHTM #InfectiousDiseases #Research #Dissertation #Epidemiology

Applications are now open for our MSc Global Health and Development. This course creates the global health leaders of the future. Students first receive a grounding in a range of global health topics, including epidemiology and data sciences, health systems, health economics, social justice and equity and health policy. Then, you can either specialise or take a broad range of courses, as you wish, ranging from climate change and its effect on health, conflict and health, humanitarian health, gender and health, infectious diseases control, non-communicable disease control and global mental health. We focus almost entirely on skills and critical thinking. We want you, when you leave UCL, to be able to analyse health challenges anywhere in the world and in any area of global health, devise solutions to test objectively different approaches or to implement policies to improve health, taking into account the evidence from different sources, such as from the fields of social science, medicine, health economics, and the local setting, including the voices from communities, people living with health conditions, health workers and the health system. Our course differs from MSc global health courses elsewhere in a number of ways. UCL is ranked 2nd in the UK for research power and 9th in the university world rankings. This means we will focus on practical skills, with teaching informed by world-leading research that our academics are currently conducting. We also teach inter-disciplinary methods, that is how can the different research disciplines be employed together to tackle the bigger health challenges facing us today. If you don’t know UCL, here is the reason why we are the best place in the world to study global health https://lnkd.in/eB6cduy4

My love for epidemiology and health education is deeply rooted in the profound impact these fields have on improving public health and empowering communities. 1. Making a Difference: Both epidemiology and health education are central to public health. Epidemiology helps identify disease patterns, causes, and risk factors, providing the foundation for effective health interventions. Health education translates this knowledge into actionable information, empowering individuals and communities to make informed health decisions. The synergy between these fields ensures that my work can make a tangible difference in people's lives. 2. Intellectual Challenge: The analytical nature of epidemiology appeals to my love for solving complex problems. It requires a deep understanding of statistical methods, critical thinking, and an ability to interpret data to uncover the underlying causes of health issues. This intellectual rigor keeps me engaged and continuously learning. Health education complements this by requiring creativity and communication skills to convey complex information in an accessible and impactful way. 3. Interdisciplinary Approach: Both fields are inherently interdisciplinary. Epidemiology intersects with medicine, biology, environmental science, and statistics, while health education draws on psychology, sociology, communication, and pedagogy. This multidisciplinary nature allows me to work with a diverse range of professionals and topics, enriching my understanding and broadening my impact. 4. Practical Applications: The practical implications of epidemiology and health education are immensely fulfilling. Epidemiological research informs policies and public health strategies, while health education initiatives translate these strategies into practice, promoting healthy behaviors and preventing diseases. Seeing the direct results of my work in improved health outcomes and empowered communities is incredibly motivating. 5. Global and Local Impact: Epidemiology and health education offer opportunities to address health issues both globally and locally. Understanding and mitigating health disparities, responding to outbreaks, and promoting health equity are crucial tasks that have a far-reaching impact. This dual focus allows me to contribute to global health improvements while also addressing specific local needs. 6. Lifelong Learning and Growth: The ever-evolving nature of health threats and advancements in research and education ensures that there is always more to learn. This continuous learning environment keeps me intellectually stimulated and professionally fulfilled. My love for epidemiology and health education stems from their ability to improve public health, the intellectual and practical challenges they present, their interdisciplinary nature, their local and global impact, and the continuous opportunities for learning and growth. #epidmiology #publichealth #education

Public Health Core Competencies - Public health reflects what we as a society could do to remain health. Simply, the core function of Public health is characterized as assessment ( epidemiology and biostatistics), policy (formulation, implementation and evaluation-behavioral abc social science, Heath policy and management) and assurance ( essential pubic health services ( public health care development (immunization, disease screening ), implementation and evaluation). This Basics of Public Health Core Competencies materials below, simply describes these core functions of Public Health, with significant examples, and the application of these inititives and explanation in Certified Public Heath as well as pubic Heath training and mentoring . Since epigenomic determinants of Heath (EDH) is not reflected in this publication, the Jones and Bartlett Publishers is anticipating a second edition of this book soon. The SPH and public health program (PHP) with passion and commitment in epigenomic public health, especially HBUC are welcome to contact the author for their advancement in this direction! The main focus of pubic heath improvement remains assessment core function prior to policy and assurance . With respect to Public Heath improvement at any subpoplation, if we are unable to identify ( epidemiology and biostatistics as well as environmental sciences ) , we are unable to rectify ( policy and assurance ) .

I am so excited to share that I have finished a certification course on understanding research methods from University of London. The key modules of this course were Research methods, Literature Reviews, Planning and time management in research writing. According to @sandraHalpern She said that a good research question should be very significant, strong to answer a question and also be researchable. In understanding a gap, you also need to show where the gap is and then develop a plan to fill the gap. Charlotte Horyck in demonstrating how literature review is so relevant to research projects said that Literature Reviews allows the researcher to familiarize him/herself with the current field. It also allows the researcher to figure out where the current trends are and not only the current trends but the past trends tooo. Finally and time management is very essential in Research projects because you really need time for your writing to evolve and bring your creativity into life. The interesting part of this course was the peer review session and discussion forum. we had time to review the work of our colleagues and also got each other's feedback from the project given. I will recommend the course for Early career researchers . #Publichealthresearcher #earlycareerresearcher #Epidemiologist #Processoverresult #scientificresearchwriting #lookingforinternshipopportunity #Talentlabltd International Society of Global Health FHI 360 Society for Family Health Nigeria International Research Center of Excellence_IHVN
