Challenges and opportunities in adopting OMOP-CDM in Brazilian healthcare: a report from Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein #OHDSISocialShowcase Lead: Maria Abrahao Team: Uri Adrian Prync Flato, Mateus de Lima Freitas, Diogo Patrão, Amanda Gomes Rabelo, Cesar Augusto Madid Truyts, Gabriela Chiuffa Tunes, Etienne Duin, Gabriel Mesquita de Souza, Soraya Yukari Aashiro, Adriano José Pereira, Edson Amaro Background: Brazil has one of the largest and most complex public health systems in the world, with concerns related to discrepancies in data quality, lack of interoperability among federated states and lack of informatization (paper based medical records). Broader use of real-world data and classification standards are particularly challenging, for instance, since health conditions and related services or procedures are not linked. Implementing a common standardized data model is seen as an opportunity to integrate a multifaceted healthcare system in our country. Since 2018, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein (HIAE), in Sao Paulo - Brazil, started a journey to implement OMOP standards, and since 2022 has become a partner of the OHDSI Community. Thank you to all our speakers at the second #digitaltwins event. Roger Highfield eloquently demystified the concept, Elisa Rauseo, Cameron Watson and Jenny Camaradou explained the needs faced by clinicians and patients - avoid the #techpush and Corné (Serah) Hurter gave a South African perspective on why digital twins are a good idea. Caroline Roney chaired Mariano Vazquez talking about how #medtech and #pharma are already using the ELEM Biotech cardiac model and Christopher Clark explaining how they have used DT to massively reduce waiting lists at Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Hospitals. Prof Alejandro Frangi FREng gave a keynote using examples of coils for brain aneurysms improving patient outcomes, but also making the development safer, quicker and cheaper. Peter Coveney showed us how DTs can be integrated into healthcare systems and can be used to reduce #healthinequalities. Steven Luttrell presented real world evidence and results of the work done with Sanome on predicting deterioration in patients, and therefore optimising resources and transfers for these patients. Julia Manning PhD MCOptom chaired Andrea Manfrin PhD MBA PharmD Deputy Director, Clinical Investigations and Trials at MHRA, Andrew Davies Digital Health Lead at Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) and Johan Ordish, Head of Digital Innovation Roche talking about the regulatory practicalities of a digital twin and what makes them safe. Andrea Townsend-Nicholson chaired a conversation between Sheuli Porkess, Maartje Schermer, Nuno Faria and Jenny Camaradou where the philosophical, #ethical and #sustainability aspects of DTs were discussed. Wahbi El-Bouri led us through the possibilities offered by the next generation of digital twins. Kevin Fong gave us a clear example of how the digital twin created during the #covid pandemic of the entire population of England can lead to better outcomes for the next pandemic. These entities, due to their closeness to the service recipients, are often well attuned to their needs – and best able to monitor how they change with time. ➡️ This thinking led us today to participate in the Ukraine Health Rethink Forum, initiated by the Association of Territorial Communities of Ukraine. In the panel discussion “Effective Partnership for Healthcare Recovery” we spoke alongside giants among organisations, such as USAID and WHO. A useful and somewhat humbling experience! Kateryna Pavelko and Anastasia Flanagan highlighted how we: - Work within the Swedish government’s Ukraine strategy to deliver sustainable and needs-based support to healthcare establishments, governance bodies and NGOs. - Facilitate learning and experience exchanges on subjects such as digitalization, prosthetics, healthcare management, and traditional Swedish areas of expertise such as antibiotic resistance and cancer diagnostics and treatment. - All the while aiming to build the missing link between Swedish solutions and Ukrainian needs, and to educate about the potential of the Ukrainian market – in Sweden, still underexplored.
