More than ever, artists and bands depend on merch sales to make touring possible. That's why, in 2022, we launched our 100% Venues Campaign—a public database of UK venues that charge zero commission on artists' merchandise sales. 👕 Since its inception, over 700 venues have signed up to our directory, committing to charge zero commission on artists' merch. 👕 Supported by over 80 industry organisations and companies, we published an open letter re-emphasising the call for change. The letter urged artists, fans, venues, and other industry professionals to sign our petition in support of the campaign and its four key principles. 👕 In August 2023, Academy Music Group reduced commissions to 15% across its network of O2 Academy venues in the UK. 👕 The UK’s Parliamentary Culture, Media and Sport Committee called on the music industry to adhere to the FAC’s 100% Venues Campaign. ⭐ Here are just 6 out of 700 gold-standard venues charging 0% commission: Learn more: https://lnkd.in/epyYZ93P

A Live Music Pass for under 25’s? There is increasing evidence that the connection to live music experience for under 25 is being impacted by cost of living impacts, changing drinking habits and other issues. The live music industry has a demand issue So, I’m thinking of demand stimulus - why not take a serious look at a ‘Live Music Pass” for next summer? $200 vouchers to be spent at live music events and venues. Particular focus on U 25s. News indicating that the UK's live music industry is collapsing is truly concerning.   While giant promoters rake in billions each year from sell-out gigs, it has been reported that independent venues in smaller towns and cities are struggling to make ends meet.   One article highlighted that 125 UK venues abandoned live music in 2023 - half of them for good. This was as a consequence of the impacts of Covid-19, Brexit or escalating costs.   The Music Venue Trust is campaigning for a stadium and arena levy, mirroring a successful model already implemented in France. A huge well done to Glasgow City Council for backing the introduction of a new £1 levy on tickets for large gigs in the city with the proceeds used to support small music venues. The Music Venue Trust has been banging the drum for an industry levy of £1 per ticket on arena and stadium shows to be passed down to grassroots venues. According to the Music Venue Trust, 125 venues across the UK abandoned live music in 2023, and half of them shut completely. There's a huge disparity between the smallest and biggest venues and more needs to be done to ensure there's an ecosystem for the smallest bands and artists to progress to playing the largest ones in the future. The excellent work of the MVT now has the support of the cross-party Culture, Media and Sport committee who state an industry-led voluntary levy should come into effect in 2025. A big 👏 👏 👏 to those in Glasgow for embracing this levy for the benefit of their grassroots venues and I hope other large venues follow suit. Read more - https://lnkd.in/graWwPfn

According to SBS, the 'metal fans are keeping Australian festivals alive'. It has been a shocking year for Australian music festivals in general, with some high-profile ones being cancelled. Festivals like Knot Festival and Good Things have remained on-schedule. When I was the Victorian State Editor for FasterLouder in the early 2000's, it was clear that more metal, punk and hardcore content was needed. Twenty years later, we can now see those loyal, lifelong fans of these genres are keeping genre-specific festivals alive. It was interesting to read this article and hear from Chris O’Brien about how things have changed while promoting Good Things and Knotfest. Let’s hope a federal government inquiry aimed at saving the live music industry will uncover some findings and solutions. 125 small music venues in the UK closed last year. Why? Because people won’t pay to see live music at a local level. Pubs and small music venues are paying local artists on the hope they cover the cost in drinks sales. But this model is obviously not sustainable. Supporting local music venues or pubs putting on music night by paying an entry fee similar to the cost of a takeaway pizza would make all the difference. So why are we willing to pay 3 figure ticket prices to see international artists on mass? £600 per ticket to see Taylor Swift, standing closer to the stage. Is what a friend has paid for her and her daughter, as an example. So if people are willing to continue to pay these amounts, why can’t some of the revenue be taxed to support local music nights and venues? We also need to get back to supporting local musicians and venues by not expecting to watch them for free. https://lnkd.in/etxfiPWR
