🌊 Did you know that many parts of The Netherlands are sinking because of centuries of lowering groundwater levels, and that this has big implications for climate change (and the people living there)? 🌿 In the LANDMARC Horizon2020 project, we examined how to address this interesting socio-ecological issue.

A meeting was held with the focal point of Morocco's MRV system During the meeting, the parties discussed the experience of Morocco's "Territorial Plans for Climate Change Adaptation" in effectively organizing the activities of the MRV system. In particular, the experts proposed to develop an institutional normative document to determine the activity of various bodies and interested parties to implement the inventory of greenhouse gases in the Sus Massa region, to introduce the MRV system in the region and sectors, and to ensure the quality and control of the system. https://lnkd.in/dfnnenyZ

Important reading from the European Court of Auditors on how the #RRF may not be as green as initially expected. As we think about a new generation of incentives, it's essential to draw lessons from #RRF and other funds on directionality, instruments, clear criteria, and simplification. With the #Draghi Report calling for a significant scale-up in investments to keep the European Union on the right track and highlighting the role of public #incentives in leveraging private funds, aligning the interpretation of #green criteria between Member States' fund managers and auditors becomes critical, simplifying and clarifying the process for all. #industrial policy #innovation #climate adaptation #climate change

Like a never-ending story, output and performance indicators prove once again to be a very poor instrument to steer and analyse the results of a policy based on call-for-projects. As this funding mechanism puts forward short-term accountability and paper promises in an austeritarian context where the pressure to spend quickly is huge, it is not surprising that local/national authorities prioritise what's on the market (or in their pipe) over the developement of alternative projects. And eventually play a bit with the figures. To adress the emergencies of climate change, why not be bold and allocate again a portion of these funds to full-public programmes that will not only spend but also plan, develop and run the projects deemed useful by the community ? Why stick to existing, and unsatisfactory projects, if we could experiment less-intermediated forms of funding ?

We may be overlooking the potential of crushed rock to trap tons of carbon across swathes of arid farmland, a new study shows.  Rock weathering has such significant carbon-fixing potential that research finds it can supercharge us on our path towards our climate targets. Studies from the UK show that this technique could capture 45% of the carbon needed to reach the country’s net zero goals. https://lnkd.in/g8NuMYTx
