Floating LiDAR trial offshore Brazil delivers accurate wind readings Sept. 26, 2024 DNV has completed verifying a stage 3 floating LiDAR (light detection and ranging) system offshore Brazil. DNV has completed the verification of a stage 3 floating LiDAR (light detection and ranging) system offshore Brazil. Over a 55-day period, DNV conducted rigorous tests on the Fugro SEAWATCH buoy, equipped with a Zephir ZX300M LiDAR. It evaluated the floating LiDAR system’s performance against a reference LiDAR unit onshore to verify its performance and accuracy in measuring wind and metocean data in various offshore conditions off the coast of Porto do Açu, Rio de Janeiro. According to DNV, conventional wind measurement techniques offshore, such as the use of meteorological masts, can be expensive and complex to operate. Floating LiDAR systems are thought to be more cost-effective. For this project, the verification showed a high data availability and low level of uncertainty in wind speed and direction measurements, DNV said, confirming that floating LiDAR technology can be reliable for offshore wind applications in Brazil. DNV added that the verification could be significant to the establishment of offshore wind in Latin America as a whole.

LiDAR is the only way flight heights can be measured currently, and not modelled. I will be very interested in the outcome of this study as APEM Group provide LiDAR as part of their Digital Aerial Survey service. #ornithology
What is LiDAR and how are we using it to protect seabirds? LiDAR, Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses lasers to accurately measure distances in real time. Our 'ReSCUE' project, funded by the The Crown Estate through its Offshore Wind Evidence and Change programme, is examining the use of LiDAR, combined with aerial imagery, to provide improved measures of seabird flight heights. The results of this work will enhance our understanding of collision risk with offshore wind farms and mitigation measures to support the more nature-friendly expansion of offshore wind. Exciting progress underway through Natural England’s Reducing Seabird Collisions Using Evidence (ReSCUE) project. This innovative initiative is improving our understanding of seabird flight patterns, a vital step for seabird conservation and the responsible expansion of offshore wind. Access to better data on seabird flight heights and risks is essential to streamlining the consenting process for offshore wind projects. Alongside accelerated grid connections and other critical efforts, this helps to unlock the 50GW of clean energy capacity required by 2030, supporting the Government’s clean power goals. ReSCUE is part of our £50 million Offshore Wind Evidence and Change Programme (OWEC), which funds a range of projects to de-risk and accelerate offshore wind deployment while supporting nature restoration. By addressing both energy and environmental needs, we’re supporting the UK’s position as one of the most attractive places to invest in offshore renewables, whilst enabling our marine and coastal ecosystems to thrive. The floating LiDAR system, BA-FLS-NX5, manufactured by Blue Aspirations, has gone through extreme conditions and has eventually been deployed over 45 offshore wind measurements successfully so far. It contains 10 projects that were deployed in the first quarter of 2024. The system availability of all projects has exceeded 98%, and the mean data availability is over 97%. https://lnkd.in/gxQjccyM #offshorewind, #windenergy, #floatinglidarsystem, #renewableenergy

🌟 Excited to share DNV’s first scanning lidar verification at GEO-NET’s 200m mast! 🚀 DNV has completed its first scanning lidar verification at GEO-NET’s 200m mast—an exciting milestone expanding our capabilities beyond Janneby and advancing wind resource assessments. If you have any questions, Robert Menke and I are happy to support. A big thank you to our amazing team, GEO-NET, and Vaisala for making this possible! #DNV #WindEnergy #Innovation #RemoteSensing #Teamwork
DNV has successfully completed its first scanning lidar verification at the 200-meter measurement mast operated by GEO-NET Umweltconsulting GmbH. While we regularly perform scanning lidar verifications at our Janneby site, this milestone showcases our ability to expand these verifications to diverse locations, accommodating the needs of the industry. This particular verification, conducted in single-scanning mode at a distance of 2.2 km from the mast, represents an important step in advancing remote sensing technologies for wind resource assessments. We are proud to collaborate with GeoNet and Vaisala (lidar manufacturer) to drive the industry forward, improving the accuracy and reliability of wind measurements.
