In a recent article for Energy Voice RSK Renewables Director Kit Hawkins talks about the hurdles Onshore wind has to clear to realise its full UK potential. Kit explains how onshore wind in England has been brought onto a level playing field with other renewable energy technologies, and infrastructure. He says that the recent announcements are likely to be a critical point in the future for onshore wind in the UK, but this is just the start of what is needed. Let’s use that new-found optimism to make sure that we get it right this time. 🌬️ We were excited to read that offshore wind is “back on track” in the UK following the results of the country’s latest renewable energy auction. However, there are also warnings that the government procured just half of what was needed to hit its 2030 targets as time runs short for new projects. Contracts were handed out to 3.8GW of new offshore wind projects, but analysts had said 10GW would be needed each year to keep the 2030 target in reach. Plenitude, part of Eni, has energised the new 39 MW Borgia onshore wind farm in the province of Catanzaro, Calabria, Italy. This new wind farm adds to Plenitude’s growing portfolio of renewable energy plants in Italy, where the company now boasts approximately 1 GW of installed capacity. The Borgia wind farm features nine wind turbines that are expected to produce 84 GWh of electricity annually, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of over 30,000 households. “The completion of the Borgia wind farm represents a further step in our growth path in the renewables sector and reaffirms our commitment to providing green energy to our customers in Italy,” said Paolo Bellucci, Head of Renewable Business Plenitude Italy. “We believe that wind energy can make a significant contribution both to the energy transition and to achieve Plenitude’s carbon neutrality goals by 2040, to provide fully decarbonised energy to our customers.” Plenitude aims to exceed 8 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2027 and over 15 GW by 2030. #cleanenergy

The projects span a variety of technologies, including offshore and onshore wind, solar, tidal, and floating offshore wind, with offshore wind accounting for approximately 5.3 GW of the awarded capacity. Notable achievements include nine fixed-bottom offshore wind contracts totaling 4.9 GW and a single floating wind project, the Green Volt Offshore Windfarm, led by Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn. Once operational, the projects will bring the UK’s total CfD-backed renewable energy capacity to 34.74 GW. Among the significant projects is ScottishPower’s East Anglia Two Wind Farm, which will deliver 963 MW of clean energy by 2028/2029 and power nearly one million homes.
