𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 & 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴? As a Specialist Sales & Marketing Consultant, one question I often hear is: “𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺-𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴?” Here’s why hiring managers lean toward candidates with direct industry experience: • 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗽-𝗨𝗽 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: Sales and marketing professionals with industry experience already know the landscape, terminology, and common challenges. This enables them to hit the ground running. • 𝗜𝗻-𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: Industry-specific candidates bring an understanding of the audience, competitors, and customer pain points that can be difficult to replicate. This expertise translates into more effective, targeted campaigns and sales strategies from day one. • 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁-𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀: Experienced candidates often come with established relationships with key industry players, giving them a head start in generating business and forming partnerships. • 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁: Clients respond positively to professionals who understand their unique challenges, boosting trust and making it easier to secure new business. Whilst these benefits are clear, it’s essential for hiring managers to keep an open mind. Professionals from other industries can bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and unique problem-solving approaches. In my view, both sales and marketing experience and the right attitude often outweigh industry familiarity alone. But when a candidate checks both boxes they become extremely high in-demand. What’s your take? Have you seen the benefits of hiring from within the industry, or do you find broader experience equally valuable?

If you can read between the lines of job descriptions, you'll get hired. Sales openings say they seek candidates who: — Have strong verbal and written communication skills. — Can develop rapport with clients to foster long-term partnerships. — Demonstrate a drive to meet and exceed sales quotas or targets. — Show the ability to work independently and proactively seek solutions. — Exhibit openness to feedback and a willingness to learn new sales methodologies. But sales hiring managers really care about these: — Do you have the determination to pursue challenging sales targets? — Will you be able to cope with the inevitable frustrations that come with sales? — Can you execute the daily prospecting and closing efforts required to achieve our targets? — Will you be able to collaborate and coordinate with extended teams, even when there are misalignments? — Can you communicate our value proposition to prospects effectively and handle objections with grace? — Do you understand the sales tools we use and the KPIs we track? If you're interviewing for a sales role and your hiring manager doesn't ask some of these questions, take the initiative! Raise these as common concerns and show how you would address them. This will make you stand out.
