The biggest winners are Flemish and Dutch universities - KU Leuven, Ghent, Vrije University Brussels, Leiden, Twente, Utrecht, Delft. For a small area of under 25 million people - the commitment to innovation, research and open trade - continues to underpin a relatively high level of growth, decent (if creaking) public services, sustainable public debts and a little bit of Anglosphere style flexibility in a continent full of red tape 😁 But, for Flanders key challenges remain: 1. High levels of personal taxes are hindering entrepreneurship; 2. To give young people a chance - the burden of taxes must be shifted from work to wealth (yes including property!!): 3. Legal immigration is essential to continued economic success across many economic sectors; 4. Flemish government language policy at university level must be loosened. Becoming a global centre of English language postgraduate education is not a threat to the Dutch language - rather it could enhance the attractiveness of Flanders as a place to live, work and learn to the benefit of all its citizens.

SEMINAR GATE-LSE ▶️ Tuesday, April 9, 10h30-11h45 ▶️ Venue : Tréfilerie Campus; Michelet Building; Room 202 ▶️ Speaker : Paul CHARRUAU (GATE-LSE, Université Jean Monnet) ▶️ Title : "Universities and innovation: Empirical evidence from the local impact of new-universities created in France" ▶️ Abstract : 🔸 The creation of new universities is probably one of the oldest public policies boosting economic development. 🔸 Several studies, which date back to the seminal work by Jaffe 1989, show that this impact takes place mainly locally. 🔸 On this basis, a number of public research and higher education decentralization programmes were implemented over the last decades in order to reduce territorial imbalances. However, there is still insufficient evidence about their relevance. 🔸 In this context, this study is the first to test the causal impact of setting up new universities within secondary cities to foster local innovation. 🔸 Focusing on the French university decentralisation policy in the late 20th century, we rely on patent data as indicators of innovation outcome. 🔸 Based on a staggered event study design, and controlling for unobserved local features and annual shocks, the paper analyses 183 commuting-zones between 1980 and 2014, without higher-education establishment before 1980 and located outside of the Paris region. 🔸 This balanced panel includes 10 zones with “new-universities” created from 1990 to 1995, 48 decentralized satellite campuses created from 1980 to 2013, and 125 zones without any higher-education establishment. 🔸 The preliminary results suggest that higher education decentralisation has a positive and significant impact on local patenting. 🔸 The effects seem more robust in small cities that benefit from hosting decentralized satellite campuses, whereas it is less clear that new-university creation led to substantial innovation boost when comparing with areas of similar size. ▶️ Visio : https://lnkd.in/dMzgBF_z More info : ℹ www.gate.cnrs.fr ℹ https://lnkd.in/dBS5K2wU ℹ se2@univ-st-etienne.fr ℹ 👆https://lnkd.in/ebPeunab Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne CNRS - Centre national de la recherche scientifique #GATE_LSE #se2schoolofeconomics #drivedecisions #thinkforward #schoolofeconomics #datadrivendecisions

As I reach the end of my doctoral journey, initiated in 2021 at the request of the President of the Université du Littoral Côte d'Opale (ULCO), I wish to share key insights from this comprehensive study on university impact. This research, conducted in collaboration with the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), offered a unique opportunity to measure and compare the impacts of two distinctly different universities on their respective territories. The complexity inherent in university missions and the multiplicity of their effects have consistently challenged researchers in their quest for a universally applicable methodology. My work proposes a novel approach to understanding and evaluating the impact of universities on their host territories, moving beyond traditional economic indicators. Central to this research is the reconceptualization of the "quintuple-helix" model. I propose integrating "third-places" as the fifth helix. This proposal better reflects the realities of 21st-century university ecosystems, acknowledging the crucial role of intermediate spaces in facilitating knowledge exchange and innovation. The comparative analysis of ULCO and UCLouvain revealed significant differences in their approaches to territorial engagement: - ULCO, created in 1991 under the Plan Université 2000, faces specific challenges related to its territorial anchoring in a region undergoing industrial reconversion. - UCLouvain, with its rich historical legacy and international reputation, demonstrates a mature ecosystem orchestration, deeply integrated with industry and society. My methodology, based on a university-mission-oriented approach, allowed for a nuanced evaluation of each university's economic impact. This method revealed how the distribution of impact varies across teaching, research, and knowledge valorisation missions. Furthermore, the study proposes a new analytical framework for assessing universities' ecosystem roles. This framework examines how universities transition from participants to leaders within their innovation ecosystems, considering factors such as institutional age, size, and local context. This research opens new perspectives for rethinking the place and forms of university engagement in 21st-century society and territories. It underscores the importance of a contextualized approach, taking into account the historical, regional, and strategic specificities of each institution in the development of adapted university and territorial policies. I invite discussions on these findings and their implications for higher education policy and regional development strategies. #HigherEducation #InnovationEcosystems #UniversityImpact #RegionalDevelopment

I believe it’s time to think of a different scale. We are in 2024 the education institutions quality should be based on more tangible achievements. More integrative environments (with industry), more effective and innovative solutions rather than the “quantity”. What’s your thoughts? #education #research #university #ranking #swiss #zurich #design #management
The University of Zurich is one of the most prestigious universities in Switzerland and Europe, even in the whole world... It is enough to know that Albert Einstein obtained his doctorate from this prestigious university... Surprisingly, the university administration took the decision to withdraw from the ranking sites and will not submit papers for classification for next year. From their point of view, engaging in these ranking puts pressure on universities to publish useless research (how much, not how) and debunking scientific research principles. They found that university staff turned to be publish machine doing unnecessary doubtful publications just to gain name and fame. So they decided to get out of this race that turns the university into a profit-making institution whose goal is to attract clients. https://lnkd.in/dt8Jqk5d

It was inspiring as always to share ideas with colleagues in the ISE Seminar series. Yesterday we talked about how to solve the problem of large knowledge graphs for classification systems (like ICONCLASS) that has a huge size but sparse assignments of concepts. To solve this, we are using our FIZzysearch SPARQL query rewriting library.
🌎Guests from Bolivia! Two guest students from Bolivia joined our ISE seminar talk at FIZ Karlsruhe today: STEM students Grace Carola Torrico Carvajal and Laura Delgadillo Artero from the Universidad Privada Boliviana who are currently studying att the Hochschule Karlsruhe (HKA) / University of Applied Sciences joined yesterday's seminar talk and got to learn more about efficient large virtual knowledge graphs. It was a pleasure - many thanks to the whole ISE team around Harald Sack for the discussion, thanks to Sven Hertling for arranging the visit and Etienne Posthumus for the inspiring presentation! Have a great time in Karlsruhe, Grace and Laura, and come see us again any time! 🤩Got curious? If you are interested in FIZ Karlsruhe's research activities and want to learn more, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/ebjk7pBq Maybe want to join one of our seminars or other events? Reach out and send us a message, maybe we can arrange a visit for you too! #GuestStudents #ISE #FIZKarlsruhe #Research #KnowledgeGraphs #InternationalAcademia
