What’s most important to teach about sustainability and how can we do it in every field? To develop your own answers to these questions, see Teaching Sustainability Competencies across the Disciplines - A Guide for Instructors, co-edited by Chad Raphael and Sarah Young, and written by the AASHE Scaling Up Sustainability across the Curriculum Community. The guide summarizes and compares the major sustainability competencies defined by educational experts convened by UNESCO and the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE). The guide’s major contribution is to illustrate a wide variety of ways to integrate the competencies into courses in every discipline by identifying: • Sample learning outcomes • Examples of curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment of student learning • Relevant examples of the scholarship of teaching and learning. Aspiring sustainability educators, and professional development leaders who support instructors to integrate sustainability across the curriculum, will find the guide useful for sparking faculty members’ creativity. As sustainability competencies become more widely adopted in higher education, the guide can also help instructors align their course-level learning objectives with the learning goals of their departmental majors, minors, general education requirements, and certificate programs. Published open access under a Creative Commons license, the guide can be adapted and translated freely, and it will be updated regularly with new resources. It has been piloted successfully as a resource in Santa Clara University’s summer workshops on sustainability and justice across the curriculum. https://lnkd.in/gmFjdxyW SCU Center for Sustainability #SustainabilityEducation

In today's rapidly changing world, the importance of sustainability education cannot be overstated. As we face unprecedented environmental challenges, including climate change, resource depletion, and biodiversity loss, it is crucial that individuals and communities are equipped with the knowledge and skills to address these issues. Sustainability education plays a vital role in fostering an understanding of these challenges and promoting actions that lead to a more sustainable future. #sustainability #pearson #education

While imparting knowledge is essential, We "Academic Educators" have a responsibility to inspire and equip the next generation to be stewards of the environment and to navigate "wicked problems" independently and innovate effectively. Thus, I have finally finished the "Learning for Sustainable Future" course, which was authorized by The University of Edinburgh, British Council, and Learning for Sustainability Scotland through Coursera. This course has five key Learning Outcomes: 1. Critically reflect upon an understanding of the range, scope, and nature of ‘sustainability’. 2. Explore the role of personal values and frameworks for thinking when investigating sustainability issues. 3. Explore the way in which systems, connections, and factors such as intersectionality influence the impact of sustainability issues. 4. Investigate how we might move towards action within the context of our own sphere of influence. 5. Identify and investigate a sustainability issue and share possible next steps towards taking action. I believe that we hold a key role in fostering sustainability, shaping minds to understand and address environmental challenges via Raising Awareness, Incorporating Sustainability into Curriculums, Encouraging Critical Thinking Modeling Sustainable Practices, Promoting Community Engagement. #SGDs #Sustainability #Ecosystem #Academics #Educators #Greensolutions

Just attended an captivating and enlightening session on embedding sustainability into teaching practice, hosted by University of Waterloo and the University of British Columbia Sustainability Hub. The panelists led a thought-provoking discussion on practical solutions for infusing sustainability into education, with a specific focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This subject deeply resonates with my recent exploration and integration into my courses, significantly broadening my perspectives. The session sparked important questions: How can educators effectively incorporate SDGs into their teaching? How can we introduce students to these concepts, especially if our courses don't directly align with the SDGs? The discussion yielded valuable insights: ✨Begin by defining your objectives and then strategize how to achieve them. ✨If your curriculum doesn't directly align with the SDGs, collaborate with students, involve them in the process, and don't hesitate to integrate sustainability even if you don't have all the answers yet. ✨Start by fostering self-awareness and then link it to other essential skills to enhance in the classroom. ✨Collective action is pivotal for embedding sustainability successfully. Integrating sustainability into education is crucial in higher education institutions as it equips students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and values to navigate a world that values environmental protection, social equity, and economic prosperity. By weaving the SDGs into our teaching practices, we empower students to grasp global challenges deeply and inspire them to drive positive change within their communities and beyond. Many thanks to all the panelist and the organizers. #SDSNCanada #SustainabilityEducation #sdgs2030

Interesting and inspiring resource and fully free for download... ;)
It takes a whole school... 🏫 Our chapter "Getting to a Whole School Approach" is published and waiting for you to read it! 📖 In the chapter we discuss how the school’s organisational characteristics are not just foundational elements, but dynamic aspects that shape the educational environment for sustainability education. The organisational characteristics provide firm ground but can also impose limits and are thus to be acknowledged as both enablers and potential barriers in getting to a whole school approach for sustainability. 🏫➡🌍 Open acces via: https://lnkd.in/eD5WUpqF With Anna Mogren, Jelle Boeve-de Pauw & Peter Van Petegem
