Global Food Systems need urgent Reform Integrated mangrove aquaculture offers a viable solution for degraded intertidal zones in the tropics: Multiple species of shrimp, crab, filter-feeding fish and bivalve mollusks are naturally raised in ponds which have been restored with mangroves. The mangroves provide shelter and food for aquatic species to thrive, creating a regenerative food production system that does not depend on any external inputs such as feed or fertilizers. This unique food system does not only supply local people and global markets with healthy, high-quality seafood, but captures carbon, raises biodiversity and increases the resilience of coastal communities! Mangrove waste water filtration | Enhancing sustainable aquaculture in Vietnam In Vietnam’s Mekong Delta efforts towards establishing a nature-based filtration system utilising mangroves to make aquaculture more sustainable and efficient are progressing. Ocean Health, RYNAN Aquaculture, and Larive International have joined forces to use mangroves to address issues around groundwater extraction, water contamination and coastal protection in relation to shrimp farming. By determining value through the use of mangroves the project is able to improve the natural biodiversity of these coastal habitats and create business opportunities in mangrove restoration. Supported by Partners for Water, the model represents a significant departure from traditional shrimp farming methods, paving the way for a more responsible and productive shrimp farming industry. Celebrating World Environment Day! The theme for this year is “our land, our future”. A call to conserving our resources through sustainable practices. As a fish farmer, I understand the role of aquaculture in promoting environmental sustainability if done right. 📍Aquaculture allows maximal use of limited resources which is land. A small piece of land that might not be suitable for arable crops can accommodate a tank or a concrete pond to raise fish for consumption and commercial purposes. 📍There is no waste with aquaculture. Fish effluents can serve as organic manure to plants. This is used in most aquaponics systems. 📍Fish wastes from processing can be used in the formulation of feed for livestock. In an integrated aquaculture system wastes from other animals can be fed to fish (e.g poultry-cum-fish) So when you think of sustainable land usage, aquaculture. When you think of fish farming, think of Sokvikia.
