ARE AGRI -TECH STARTUPS IN INDIA STAYING TRUE TO THEIR VISION ? ================ Every 1 in 5 startups in India is based on agriculture—a promising statistic that highlights the sector’s potential for innovation and transformation. With over 7,000 startups in agriculture and allied sectors emerging in the last nine years, and $2.4Bn invested in agri-tech and agri-inputs from 2014 to 2024, the growth is undeniable. However, a question arises: Are these startups truly staying aligned with their original vision? While many startups begin with innovative ideas aimed at solving core issues for farmers or offering unique benefits that the traditional agchem industry doesn’t address, we often see them drifting from their purpose. Over time, several startups end up adopting the same business models and practices as the regular agchem industry—losing the essence of what set them apart. Is this a natural evolution of the market, or are startups compromising innovation for survival and scalability? As India moves toward a tech-driven Green Revolution 2.0, it’s crucial to ask: • How can agri-tech startups ensure they stay true to their original purpose? • Are we focusing enough on sustainable innovation for farmers, or is funding driving the agenda? • What role can the ecosystem play in supporting startups to maintain their unique vision? The future of agri-tech depends on how we address these challenges. What are your thoughts?

Ranjith Mukundan is set to contribute his insights in the panel discussion for The Agri Entrepreneurs. We are pleased to announce Ranjith Mukundan, CEO & Co-founder at Stellapps Technologies Private Limited as a distinguished panelist in our fifth Agriculture Virtual Roundtable on Agriculture Venture Funding. In India, where agriculture is both a livelihood and a heritage for millions, the role of venture funding in transforming this sector cannot be overstated. For agri-entrepreneurs, access to venture capital is not just funding—it's a vital resource that empowers innovation and drives growth. Venture funding in agriculture enables entrepreneurs to adopt advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, precision farming, and biotechnology. These innovations are crucial for enhancing crop yield, improving product quality, and ensuring sustainable farming practices that align with global environmental standards. Moreover, this funding is key to addressing some of the pressing challenges faced by Indian agriculture, such as water scarcity, soil degradation, and the need for supply chain improvements. By investing in agri-startups, venture capitalists not only foster a culture of entrepreneurship but also contribute to food security and economic stability in the region. The impact extends beyond the individual entrepreneur. Venture capital helps build ecosystems that support a range of services from farm to fork, creating job opportunities and promoting rural development. As such, venture funding isn't just fueling agricultural ventures; it's seeding the future of India’s agrarian economy. ONLY FIVE DAYS TO GO!!! Participated as a "Panelist" at the session on “Leveraging Incubators for Start-up Excellence” at the National Conference on Building Sustainable Agricultural Start-ups in India, organised by A-Idea- NAARM TBI at Hyderabad. Representing an ICAR Agri-Business Incubator along with the panelists from the renowned incubators like IKP Knowledge Park, ICRISAT and MABIF (TNAU), under the Chairmanship of Dr RM Sundaram, Director, IIRR, we had insightful discussion on role of incubation in nurturing agricultural startups. During the discussion, I emphasized the following points: 1. In the post-COVID era, agricultural value chain focused entrepreneurship by grassroot organisations (e.g. FPO, SHG, agripreneurs) is gaining momentum. "Campus-based incubators" are facing problems in providing incubation services to grassroot businesses operating along-side the established value chains. The Satellite Incubation Centre model developed by ICAR-CTCRI ABI will be suitable for value-chain based incubation (https://lnkd.in/gwmH8bQ2) 2. The ABIs can play a key role in facilitating marketing of the technological products developed by multiple ICAR institutes. The ICAR-CTCRI ABI has developed an innovative product sale model - "Root sMart Mall" - An exclusive shop for selling technological products developed by ICAR Institutes, at the ICAR-CTCRI Campus, Thiruvananthapuram (https://lnkd.in/gNkK7uuQ). 3. There is a need to equip the agricultural students with critical business skills to enable them to either establish agritech startups or facilitate them in developing viable business models. We need to go beyond "sensitising" agricultural students to "equipping" them with critical competencies for creating and managing agritech startups. The ICAR-CTCRI has developed a system - Certified Agritech Startup Professional (CAgtSP) scheme to create "student facilitators" for Agritech startups (https://lnkd.in/gX6jTDQ5.) Thanks to a-IDEA NAARM, Dr S Senthil Vinayagam, CEO, A-idea for providing the opportunity for sharing my views at the Panel. #agritech #startup #Agri-Business Incubation
